CharredRose (Pinion)
"I think most who start here think they are lost. In a strange sense, we all are."

"Don't look at 'er if ya know what's good fer ya eyes! Treach's watchin'."

I miss them... What dragon doesn't miss their clan when they leave? Of course, most of the sailors on this ship were driven away or left before that occurred. Those of us who leave peacefully and on our own terms usually had a decent life. We just wanted more.
I saw you admiring the ship before and wanted to introduce myself but I thought better of it. Instead, I would rather leave you with that thought. That ship has been washed with more blood than any of the flight ships. If you considered working on it, you had best consider never being able to fully leave its services and just what sort of work you'll be doing.
Sometimes it's best to let the tales do the work so you don't have to.

I feel happier here. There's no threat of Razik, nor of any of his crew. Although Ecthelion couldn't care less about my stay, Lana is very happy to see me again.

History
CharredRose showed promise and exhibited power. Of a clutch of three, she was the first to hatch and the first to begin exploring beyond the nest. The hatchling nearly left the clan's boundaries when she snuck out from under the watchful eyes of her elders yet the easiest way to keep her from doing so was to illuminate her mind with adventure and intrigue.

She grew up dreaming of exploration and adventure and her favorite tales were those told of pirates. She reveled in the idea that freebooters sailed for the horizon to see what was beyond it and to take what they wanted when they chose to. Often, when she grew old enough to explore their underwater territory by herself, she would swim close to the surface to watch for ships. Her chance arrived only once when a passing pirate ship sailed over their territory. Saying her goodbyes from afar to her sibling and parents, the tundra climbed up the side of the hull despite being laden with wet fur and on to the deck.

Her arrival set the crew on edge and she was very nearly skewered by a jumpy Ecthelion. It was stopped by an unlikely dragon, Treach. The ridgeback stepped between the spiral and CharredRose until Arkken was alerted of her arrival. CharredRose was hired after she explained her intentions, though, she was warned that no story was ever truly exact.

Yet, the tundra found that out the hard way. The labor put into working on a ship was tiresome and the rewards were little. She gained calloused paws and a lean body but it wasn't until they set sail for the high seas that she learned the true meaning of 'pirate'.

She volunteered to go and investigate an uncharted island along with Heike and a few others. Shortly after they arrived, the group was captured by 'natives' and imprisoned in a wooden spike cage. Here, CharredRose was put to use. She devised a plan to escape the prison without burning the spiked ceiling down on top of them. When they left, it was by flight because the dragons they fled from couldn't fly.

When she wasn't forced to work, CharredRose was often busy belowdeck reading and recounting her adventures on the ship in books. Yet, she started to understand why only exaggerated tales reached hatchlings when they pillaged a clan.

Amidst the horror and bloodshed, she was at a loss for what to do. No one in her clan nor on the ship had taught her how to fight and Treach only protected her until he was locked in battle with a guardian. So, when she was attacked, the tundra fought to survive using tooth and claw to draw blood. She wasn't nearly as quick as she was brute force and relied on that to expose her enemy's weak parts. Still, the tundra wasn't interested in ending another dragon's life and often crippled them instead.

CharredRose was also given a sword to work with and learned how to fight using a combination of sword-fighting and physical force when she started to fight in the ring. While she wasn't considered the most agile or deadly on the ship, the tundra could hold her own in one on one combat.

Due to this unique fighting style, she became something of a training dummy in the ring. When a dragon wanted to learn how to fight against someone using a different style, CharredRose was one of the few that was often elected into the ring.

Treach's fascination with glimmering pink jewels and his want of keeping them to himself saw the ridgeback keeping a very close on CharredRose, even when they made port. It kept away attackers but drove away potential allies and CharredRose was forced to watch Treach rip the throat of Hiero, who was to become her mate.

In order to have the issue taken care of, she paid Paene to keep the cruel ridgeback away and sought out a way of hiding the brilliant pink colors she had. For now, she covers her colors with tough pieces of armor and clothing but Treach continues to make advances. Paene has kept him away for a time but she isn't always around CharredRose and CharredRose isn't always around other dragons.

Aside from Treach, her friendly attitude has seen CharredRose having no real enemies on the ship. She gets along with most of the crew but enjoys Crag's friendly demeanor most of all. Despite her welcoming personality, though, she has a plan of her own she intends to set into action to distract Treach.

Her writing has seen the dragon's books of adventures sold at the auction house. The vivid recounts of their adventures both on and off the ship often have dragons trying to retell the stories to their hatchlings without the violence that exists. As an author, she uses the pen name, Pinion to avoid being tied to the ship and she avoids using the names of fellow sailors and the ship itself. Few dragons call her by Pinion, though.

When the ship was under attack from within, CharredRose had ample warning time by the soon-to-be-captain Razik. The imperial imprisoned CharredRose when she didn't flee the ship before the mutiny though his intentions, at the time, were unclear. Terrified at the prospects of her future and angered at both what been done to the ship and herself, she nearly killed Razik when he let her out of the brig after the battle of over but Razik subdued her before she could lay a claw on him.

He promised to let her off at the nearest port provided she continued to write about pirates and his ship. He intended to fill his cabin with her books so long as she put the fear of piracy into the hearts of the dragons that envisioned her words and if she did stop writing, he would find her and kill her like the rest of the weak crew.

Unwilling to lose her life to loyalty that had been lost once the captain had been subdued, CharredRose promised and fled once they made port. When she recognized Lana leaving the ship as well, the tundra spoke with the disheartened spiral. The spiral's intentions were clear, to find her lost brother whereas CharredRose had no clear path any longer except to write. With few words exchanged, they parted not nearly as friends but allies of a shared interest: Find what they were looking for.

Unlike Lana's new adventure, CharredRose spent many of her days observing dragons at markets and the auction house. She wrote more and more each day and survived off of the stories she sold at a makeshift stall for some time. Her stall was haunted once when she made eye-contact with Razik after he had returned from a voyage but neither spoke a word. Fear and concern forced the tundra to abandon her near-comforting setting for the outside world. Yet, Sornieth was different from the high seas she was accustomed to. She never stayed with the same clan for more than a day even in the worst of weathers and found herself returning to the bustling auction house on more than one occasion.
It was on one of these occasions that she received a note from a courier. Lana had sent word of finding her brother and where they resided currently and suddenly the tundra had an idea. She found the Hidden Haven only by chance after receiving an inviting letter from her would-be penpal.

While Lana's brother, Ecthelion didn't care for her arrival, Lana had been looking forward to it. Despite claiming it only as a visit, CharredRose had set her plans into motion the moment she was welcomed within the confines of the clan. She needed a safe place from which to write her stories and Lana had provided it. Her only change made was that she no longer went by the name CharredRose but instead used her pen name. Razik knew it but would he truly be looking for her by her pen name?

The less gruesome stories she wrote were ones she told to hatchlings of the Hidden Haven. It was one of the ways she helped provide for the clan and to earn her stay. While not nearly as violent as the pirates, the change in pace was welcoming and CharredRose could rest at night knowing she was safer there than would have ever been aboard the ship.
