"No, I can not just 'make gold'. Well, okay, I can,
but I don't want to."
Rift can turn just about anything into gold- including, unfortunately, living beings. The Fire clan that he had been born in sold him to a Wind clan who wanted him for his abilities as an alchemist, but while buried in the far back of the lab he had there, he accidentally created a substance that exploded and turned his scales into gold. That's why, though his wings are large enough that under normal circumstances would be able to soar, he cannot; he is far too heavy to get into the air. The Wind clan cast him out- after all, what good to them was a dragon who could not fly?- and so he trekked upwards in search of a land that he had heard gleamed as brightly as his scales.

Since arriving at the clan, Rift has moved away from alchemy and into sewing and fashion. He finds the patterns and cloths much more friendly and forgiving than his old occupation. Occasionally, though, he will make use of his talent to give his clothes that extra something special.
