AN INTRODUCTION OF SORTS

Hi there! My name is Ari (pronounced air-ee) in real life, but sometimes people shorten my handle to Miss and I think that is extremely cute.

Yellow is my absolute favourite colour; this is not reflected in my lair at all, because for some reason I keep designing teal blue + lime green dragons instead. I'm an enthusiastic and determined sort of person, and more than a little bit silly.

Flight Rising was a pretty big part of my life when it started out in 2013, but things started slowing down for me around 2016 and I ended up taking an unintended hiatus for about three years. Whoops! As of 2020, I am happily back in the swing of things, if not as intensely as I was in my heyday.

Believe it or not, I didn't used to care about my bestiary at all. The 2013 Thundercrack Carnivale was my first festival, and I collected the Sprites because I thought they were cute and a fun way to celebrate- but I sold all of my downtime familiars without hesitation. Back then, my priority was to acquire beautiful dragons, and that was a costly, time-consuming endeavor. I spent months arranging joint breedings between other players, and then had to gene most of the hatchlings up from scratch. This is still one of my favourite FR pastimes ♥

But towards the end of 2014, I ran out of dream dragon projects. This is going to sound stupid (because it is), but my growing pile of treasure was really starting to bug me. One day I went through the Auction House and bought all of the cheapest familiars, just for something to spend on! And it spiraled out of control from there.

I had to re-purchase the downtime familiars, which is a bit embarrassing to admit. The Light Sprite cost me about 7kg, which seemed a truly impossible sum at the time, but the most expensive in pure gems actually turned out to be the Stone Borer at a whopping 15kg. You know, to this day I've never filled out a boss bestiary entry by getting the coliseum drop myself? It's a peculiar kind of laziness on my part.

Yes yes, but what about the KS familiars? What about Boolean?

Well you know those crazy people who start with a paperclip and end up with a house? That's me, but without any of the real-world applications. Cool! 'Cause here's the thing: I'm not actually a Kickstarter Backer. The Cloudy vista, the Founder achievement, the familiars- I got all of those from other players, through a series of increasingly convoluted trades.

"How?" you might ask. Well, with the help of my best friend AshAnimus (previously known as LucidDreamer), I spent the better part of 2015 learning virtual economies and cross-site trading, while simultaneously mastering the art of tracking down strangers so that I could shamelessly PM them- which is frowned upon nowadays and makes me rather obnoxious.

It started out with the owner of Khimeros selling Kickstarter codes for beads- and they were selling out, fast. Ash and I agreed to make it a joint effort; the vista would go to her, the familiar to me, and we would split the profits of the apparel and skin. It was a mad scramble for us to trade and raffle off all of our FR valuables for trinkets and beads (Raffle 1, Raffle 2), the Khimeros equivalent of treasure and gems.

But we succeeded in the end, with hardly a second to spare. Not only was there just one code left, but the FR team promptly backtracked their approval of such transactions. After our purchase, Onyx wasn't allowed to sell any more of her goodies for beads; as the premium currency on a site she owned, beads for FR codes/items were ultimately RMTs. I argued with the support ticket team extensively, and I believe I was temporarily blocked for my troubles. Onyx's account is now locked, and whatever remaining KS items and G1 imps she has are lost forever.

Other Khimeros players were in the clear though.

Although I was signed up on just about every petsite of note in an attempt to facilitate trades, I never managed to get a foothold on any of them the same way I did with Khimeros. I continued to trade almost exclusively with Khimeros players, and one day I permanently inflated the trinket:bead ratio by buying every single listing in the official Bead Market regardless of price. Sorry about that.

In December of 2015, all of my efforts to this point were rewarded in a very surprising way. What I was trying to do was get my hands on a Gen1 Imperial- for beads, of course. Instead, I found someone who sold me a Breed Change: Imperial scroll outright. Now don't get me wrong, there was a good chunk of luck involved here. I will be the first to admit that I am quite possibly the luckiest person I know. But I also worked really damn hard, was constantly saving, and trading up, down, and around.

As someone who has never cared about G1s, the scroll itself held no temptation for me. It was a stepping stone to my completing my longterm goals: acquire all four Kickstarter familiars, Boolean, a Cloudy vista, and the Founder achievement code. The auction thread was a pretty wild ride though, and I still enjoy going back and reading through it from time to time. And you know, funnily enough, I don't think the winning bidder ever used that scroll- so she might have sold it elsewhere or maybe it's still floating around out there.
