Neumonia

YOU know what's going on here, don't you?
Neumonia has seen things.
(Hot, hot, hot; It's so cold. Your chest feels like it's being crushed, you can't stop coughing-)
He does not tell the others about this. Mostly, he watches from a distance, getting involved if he's invited in, maybe cracking a bad joke or two. They wouldn't understand.
Other times, he finds himself staring at his claws. (Streaks of blood cover them, oh no, oh no-)
He tries to forget. He tries to tell himself that he's happy and safe, with a real home, that he isn't alone now. That his clan will back him up if he needs help.
(Snow. Snow. It covers your wings.)
(You hear sirens.)
Sometimes, it's hard to stay convinced.

He's not sure where it came from.
He has some sort of vague recollection where he's walking. He can't remember where, but it's barren. Dust coats his legs. His whole body seems to ache.
The sun is relentless. He feels like he is going to die, right then and there.
Suddenly, a shadow passes over him.
He looks up. It's a bird of some sort-but it can't be. Birds are supposed to have skin on their faces.
He wonders is he's hallucinating.
He realizes that the bird is watching him. Waiting for something.
At some point he must have passed out, because when he opens his eyes again the bird is only a few feet away from him. There's a small pile of leeches between them.
He does not know where the bird could have possibly found it, but he's grateful. So, so grateful.
The bird continues to follow him. It might drift away, but he can still see it no matter where it is. Eventually, the bird turns into his most trusted companion. When he's curled up in his cave, shaking (Gasping for breath, can't breathe) the bird is next to him, tattered feathers brushing against his scales. It grounds him.
He's so thankful. He really does love that bird.
