She was always there.

She was there when the clan was formed, little more than a hatchling, but there still. She has lived many times the life of her breed, yet no longer shows signs of aging. She is not strong, nor savage like the others, but she endures. Endures and survives. No one quite knows where to find her; She flits around like a butterfly, sometimes there, sometimes not.

Like many of her kin in the plaguelands, she is sick; Unlike them, her illness is not of the body but of the mind. She is forever trapped in another world, wandering the halls of the lair and whispering delirious dreams to the walls. If you listen closely you might hear her speaking, singing, weaving another tale. She tells of distant lands; The loneliness of the vast, dark ocean and the joy of bright open skies, of birdsong and sundowns, sweet summers and cold winters, all the world in a fever dream.

Sometimes, her words make sense, and wanderers may catch a glimpse of her dream world; Others, they are little but nonsense. The tales she tells are nonetheless said to be tragically beautiful, much like the skydancer herself, if only you can understand them.

But who ever would care for a mad dragon's dreams?

I would care for the dragon.

It was not until the capture of Atramelech that it occurred to anyone. Not until a mixture was found that could bring the delirious emperor a moment of clarity, and it struck a young alchemist that if the potion worked on a creature of that size, surely it could work on a dragon.

Lilja spent days, weeks in the cloying warmth of the sick-chambers. After that first taste of lucidity the dreams were torn apart little by little, eroded by the fury of a dragon long confined. When she emerged she emerged like a phoenix, fierce and bright; While she remains frail in body, she quickly proved one of the sharpest minds within the Covenant, and was taken in by Rosacea to aid the council.

Now, it is to her they take dragons whose battles are fought inside; Those who have seen too much, or see things that aren't there, or whose will falters under invisible weight. She soothes their ailment, and she does not promise it will last forever - for sometimes even her own visions return - but it is long enough for her to speak with them. Long enough to spark in them the will to live.

She longs for revenge. No, for justice. She does not remember a time before the dreams, does not know who did this to her but she is mortally certain it was someone. Not this clan - this clan has a place for her, freed her, accepted her, respects her. But someone, long ago, cursed her with a body that does not die, and a mind that did, and they left her. They left her. They left her for dead, no, worse. She will find them and rot their hearts.
But not yet... no, one day, but not yet. She is yet needed here.
