The lightning flight is, rather unsurprisingly, centered around energy. The power behind the brilliant bolts over the Shifting Expanse are easily rivaled by the tenacity of the lightning workers. The spires, wires, and machinery must all be maintained; a single fault and the whole system could crumble. But this hectic mania was never the life Castiel wanted. He was a skilled and powerful lightning mage, yes. But he wanted to be somewhere he could breathe, and even - Stormcatcher forbid - relax. So as soon as he was old enough he fled, abandoning his station under the cover of darkness. He didn't care much for the clan he left behind, and they didn't care much for the skydancer lacking in work ethic. He left only a note for his parents, a brief yet sincere apology scrawled on a scrap of paper. He traveled along the coast, first to the lands of the Lightweaver. These clans too sought knowledge, but their scholars sneered at the Stormcatcher's lowbrow workers. And so Castiel continued to the west, until the trees grew thick and dark, and the harsh sunlight was filtered behind overcast clouds. He was initially afraid of these lands, trying to pass through them as quickly as he could to avoid the infamous thieves and tricksters of the Shadowbinder. His new life suits Castiel well. He gets to train with his fellow soldiers and mages, and finally has a place he can retreat to when the world is too much and call his own. He is typically quiet and withdrawn, happy to let Deimos captain and only stepping in when needed. While the latter is one of the most well-known members of the Sanctum, Castiel tends to stay in the background. He has few he would confidently call 'friends', namely his captain |
