Biography

"Silence young one, there will be time for questions later.
For now, know this: You are of Nature now, and you are loved."

xxxxThe trees near the edge creak, shuddering in the stiff breeze that rolls over from the northeast seas, crooking the great pines that grow here into a permanent, if almost imperceptible, slant. Underfoot the crushed needles give off a scent so sharp it's hard for the lone dragon traversing this stretch to smell much else, and the thought that she will fail to sense her as of yet unknown (and mistrusted) accomplice sets anxiety pooling low in her gut. Another step, another soft crunch of needles, another waft of something nostalgic. She pushes it aside.
xxxxThe last time she'd seen the border between the Viridian Labyrinth and the Tangled wood had been her leaving these looming pines and all their long-cast shadows behind. Hers was a land of sunlight and budding life now, not this over-shaded strip of land that favored moonlight. How she longed for the feeling of warmth tickling her back now, but she had a job to do, an important mission. It was the hopes of many a dweller of the Labyrinth and loyal follower of the great Gladekeeper, and above all the faith of her matriarch in her ability, that brought her here.
xxxxShe tugged her shimmering cloak tighter about herself as the wind picked up, violet eyes glinting beneath the hang of her hood. If her snout could not be trusted to guide her, than it would be her ears, which remembered the stillness of the shadows even now, that would give away the other soul. Two souls, she should say. The hatchling, only hours old when word of her had reached the depths of the Shrieking Wilds, was the whole reason for this.
xxxxA snap of a branch underfoot, muffled by distance, pricked the lone pearlcatcher's ears forward. Hesitating only a moment to consider the recklessness of what she was about to do, she surged forward, powerful legs carrying her swiftly and silently along the forest floor toward the sound. Soon, she thought, soon there will be another little one gracing our nests. May the Gladekeeper keep us both safe until I lay eyes on that sweet haven again.

"What's my name?"
"Lykke."
"Lykke?"
"It means lucky."

xxxxTucked under the wing of her escort, the young snapper shivered. Despite the relatively mild temperatures so close to the border with the Viridian Labyrinth, the slight wind was still enough to cast a chill over her. Perhaps noticing her discomfort, the older dragon tucked it's wing tighter. The thick hide that would protect the hatchling from most dangers and resist those temperatures at either extreme had yet to toughen up on this baby, but what else could one expect from the poor thing at only a day old? The little snapper nestled closer to the warmth offered by the larger body and sighed. All of this excitement was too much. Why couldn't she have stayed in the nest with her sister?
xxxxJust as she managed to get comfortable, having cleared a small patch of dirt amidst the pine needles and curled up with her belly pressed against the familiar comfort of the earth, her companion stiffened, the small jolt of alarm travelling like a palpable ripple from the older to the younger. Amethyst eyes met violet as a pearlcatcher stepped forward from the darkness between the trees.
xxxxThe scales of this stranger glimmered all the colors of her natural born flight- which was comforting until the pearlcatcher came a little closer and she realized this new dragon didn't smell like darkness and shadows and cool moonlight at all. Instead of crisp this dragon was cloying, and that one scent, so opposite of all the little snapper had known in her brief life so far, that was somehow lighter and heavier all at once than the smell of the dark. Warmer. She crinkled her nose, breathing in through her mouth with a small huff, and glanced away from the stranger. The stranger's scales were a lie too- she could see now that they were painted on.
xxxx"This is the child?" The stranger's voice was soft and gentle, not unlike her own mother's. It made her heart ache all over again for her nest. Unable to contain herself, she began to sniffle, the noise rising to a snort once or twice before she began a soft cry somewhere between a mewl and a wail.
xxxx"Don't cry, Little One," the gentle voice soothed, claws suddenly tracing over the tougher skin on the baby's head before wrapping around her sides and hefting her into unfamiliar arms. "I am here to help you, precious hatchling. You don't know this yet, but you mean so very much to a great number of dragons."
xxxxShe didn't think she wanted to mean anything to these dragons she didn't know if it meant being away from her nest, but it didn't seem to be up to her. The pearlcatcher was already moving, taking her along in the direction that was Even-Farther-From-The-Nest. She wailed louder, reaching a peak when the scent of salt and a large body of water reached them as it drifted inland.
xxxxHer new escort, the strange not-shadow, shadow pearlcatcher lowered her to the ground gently, though clearly tired from the short run with the hatchling in tow. "You are a sturdy one aren't you? We've put some distance between us," the pearlcatcher looked back into the gloom of the forest in the direction they'd come from, "and we're nearly within spitting distance of the cliffs that mark the northern border of Shadow's lands where they meet the sea and- Goodness child please stop that noise. We don't think they know about you, but the Eleven forbid they do, it really is important that we travel as quietly and quickly as possible."
xxxx"They?" The snapper sniffled out, finally calming a bit.
xxxxThe pearlcatcher hesitated, torn between telling the child the truth and protecting her from it. "There are... Certain clans in the world that... Are rather prejudiced against certain dragons. We have good reason to believe your coloring would make you a target for such clans and... We want to keep you safe." Violet eyes watched carefully, warily almost, to see how this brief explanation would go over.
xxxx"Target?"
xxxx"Yes. To... Well it wouldn't be a very fun or happy time. You want to have fun, happy times don't you?" The stranger was clearly eager for some sort of reaffirmation of this, so the snapper nodded, triggering a relieved sigh from the stranger. "Good. Yes. I figured as much. Well. We're going to a place where you will be allowed to be as happy as you could want. Originally I thought I'd fly you there but... You are, as I mentioned, rather sturdy."
xxxxThe snapper hatchling shuffled in place. Her sister had been about the same size as she. Were other hatchlings much smaller?
xxxx"We're going to have to walk. Which means we'll have to follow the coast around through Earth territory..." Another sigh, this one long and weary in a way the little hatchling couldn't begin to wrap her mind around quite yet. The pearlcatcher stood then, and with a sweep of tufted tail over her back, urged the little snapper to follow. They had a very long way to walk indeed.
