Biography

XERMWR
shade-possessed

A letter found among a venerable priestess's files in the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. It is yellowed with age. The handwriting is tidy and precise.

High Priestess Gleam,

I am writing to report that I have made it to my destination without incident. The clan that petitioned the Exalted of Light, a rural trading clan known as Clan Lamprey, has received me with open wings and spared no time in describing the cause of their trouble in more detail to me. It is, as you suspected it would be, quite disturbing.

The only member of their foraging party who escaped mostly unscathed, a tall Mirror who introduced herself as Graihka, told me her story. Apparently they had been gathering herbs in the forest near the clan’s lair when they saw something large and dark stumbling around in a clearing nearby. It appeared from a distance to be a Guardian, perhaps lost, and one of the foragers called out to it in a friendly tone.

With startling speed, the creature turned and lunged at them, letting out what Graihka described as an “terrible scream”. Her account became shakier from here, which is unfortunate, but understandable from a dragon inexperienced with the horrors of battle. The gist of it was that the foraging party had no defense against the unexpected and ferocious assault. If other members of the clan hadn’t heard their screams and come to chase off the creature, Graihka is certain they would have been killed. The reason she came away with only a few scratches was because she had been gathering herbs further away than the others and escaped the initial mauling. Even so, she had a terrible fever for several days after the attack. The others remain in the medicine den, suffering from hallucinations and wounds that refuse to heal.

I will see what I can do for them. After that, it is time to begin the hunt.

May the Light illuminate your path always,

Paladin Umbra

An old letter carefully stored and labeled. Ink has stained the edges.

High Priestess Gleam,

Two dragons died today. The Skydancer Fafalla and the Spiral Karkami, both members of the foraging party that first encountered that abomination, have finally succumbed to their wounds despite my best efforts. The corruption had gone too deep by the time I reached them; I could not purge it. If only I had come here sooner No. I must focus solely on what is, not what could have been. To do otherwise would be straying from the path of the Lightweaver.

Regardless, the loss of two members is a massive hit to a clan as small as this one. I will be leading the bereaved in the death rites at dawn tomorrow, but first I must describe to you what I have discovered about the creature that killed them.

Several days prior to the time of writing, I set out for the site of the attack. Graihka, who I mentioned in my previous missive, insisted on leading me there herself despite the fear radiating off her in waves. Droplets of an inky black substance stained the foliage all around the ravaged swath of forest; everything that touched them withered and died. There was a strange smell in the air even days after the attack — Graihka began to retch as soon as she inhaled it, forcing us to return to the lair to treat her. Still, I had seen enough.

My suspicions about what evil had caused this were strong before, but seeing the place myself made them ironclad: I am indeed facing the vile forces of the Shade. How a dragon so tainted by its power could have ended up here, I do not know. But I will not let it slay another innocent. Clan Lamprey has already spread word of the threat to its neighbors; a large section of the forest has been declared off-limits to travelers. I have already begun the work of tracking the foul creature to its nest, so I may corner it and wipe its corruption from the world.

Radiant Lightweaver, guide my eyes to the truth I seek. Show me where my enemy lies so I may drag it into the light.
