Iris has little memory of his life before coming to Stormshead. He can recall faint impressions - a soft nest, the whip of sea wind against his skin. Beyond that, Iris' past is a mystery. He cannot even recall how his memories became lost to him.

As such, Iris' earliest memories are of waking in the deepest pit of Stormshead. His first days were hazy, clouded by fever and weakness. Dawn tells him that she found him on the edge of the deepest underground lake that she has found so far, unconscious. Whatever happened, it has left Iris scarred and fearful, and he refuses to move past the most inhabited, brightly lit levels of Stormshead. He uses his music and his stories to banish away the fear that lurks in the back of his mind, a distant remnant of whatever ordeal brought him to Stormshead in the first place.

Iris has done his best not to allow his murky past to shadow his present. His love for music and his talent for instruments, something that he supposes has persisted from his days before Stormshead, give him a purpose without which he feels that he might drown. Dawn is determined in her attempts to get Iris to participate in her experiments as she continues her quest to unravel that mysteries that lie beneath Stormshead, but Iris is equally determined to stay out of them and leave whatever dark past he may or may not have behind.

Iris is a quiet, timid soul a majority of the time. Despite his reserved nature, however, he is fearless when performing, and loves the applause that a crowd gives him after a performance. Iris' past has instilled within him both a desire to keep all negative attention away from himself and a fear that whatever dark secrets his past holds will make him unworthy for the care that Stormshead has shown him. He is determined to live his life morally and righteously, using his talent to bring pleasure and happiness to all that he can.

This upright will, however, is compromised by Reine, with whom Iris shares an open relationship. If asked to define it, Iris would say that he loves her, and hopes that she would say the same in return, but given the immoral nature of Reine's choice of profession and her unrepentant enjoyment of it, Iris often finds himself conflicted. He finds it hard to reconcile the Reine that he loves with her profession, but ultimately would always choose her over anything else. He worries that Reine, who he knows is a thrill-seeker and somewhat flighty, will find something that catches her fancy more than him each time she leaves on a contract, and does his best to banish these insecurities by busying himself with a myriad of activities, from teaching the younger dragons the legends of their ancestry to even going out with the scout parties to patrol the region from time to time.

Apart from Reine, Iris' closest friend and companion is Dawn. Somehow, between her attempts to get Iris to cooperate in her experiments and Iris' constant refusals, they formed a close friendship, and Iris is always willing to help her out as long as it doesn't involve his own shadowed circumstances. He's also a favorite among the younger dragons, who often beg him for more songs and performances.
