At the very fringes of the Foxfire Bramble, where the realm of the Shadowbinder meets the shores of the sea, there towers a gaunt old tree, blackened, leafless, devoid of all life. Amidst that tangle of roots and thorns, there is a small opening, perhaps just the right size to allow a Pearlcatcher dragon to slip through if they were to fold their wings. Of course, it is abandoned now; it was stripped clean long ago, all traces of the traitor wiped away, the walls of the small cavern charred, small pieces of stone and dried plant and the occasional pottery shard trampled into the dirt. Cobwebs are all that decorate the desolate little hole, though those had found their way in long before it was abandoned. Surely the owner of such a place couldn't have cared much for their own well-being- it is the home of a beast, some would argue, for surely no proper Pearlcatcher would've been able to stand living in such a claustrophobic space, no self-respecting Pearlcatcher would've been able to set their pearl down in the dirt among cobwebs... but perhaps this particular Pearlcatcher had no pearl; perhaps she had indeed become a beast; perhaps she cared nothing for herself, but felt she had some higher calling... But surely it is just a myth. They would've been able to detect a Shade-Touched dragon : for that is what the whispers say, that the higher calling she spoke of was the Shade, that it spoke to her with the voice of the Gods; surely the Gods would not wish to destroy innocent lives!- or perhaps she was lying, perhaps she was simply unhinged, somewhere deep down where it didn't make itself known except for at the worst of times- a victim to her own fears, some would say. Or perhaps it was a side effect of her magic, for she was, prior to her conviction, one of the more powerful necromancers in the land. In the end, however, it made no difference. Aermead is at first sight an enigma, a mute dragon of mysterious origins shrouded in the ragged fabrics of one for whom it is sufficient just to survive until the next morning. Dig a little deeper, however, and it isn't too difficult to unearth the trail of bloodshed that follows in her tracks. Daughter of the late Seijaku and Valkhyre, Aermead hails from Clan Alpha Carinae. She was a highly respected member of the clan, before Aquila finally betrayed her and Akyra deemed her responsible for the mysterious deaths of her mate and sons, among others. That little voice at the back of her head, which had guided her along her quest as she offered aid to the inexperienced Alpha and used her power to twist events in her favor, gave her a new quest: Stay alive, Aermead!- Survive, survive, survive for me... Now that the clan wants nothing more than her death at their claws, she has made a strategic retreat- permanently. But it's clear to the few who have spoken to her that she is little more than a shell of her former shell. Perhaps that's all she is: her mind just a fragile shell, a perfect vessel for a portion of the Shade. |
