Where is he? Where did he go? The treacherous path between the Starwood Strand to the Mushroom Grove proved heinous. Rikaal has never felt such heartbreak. She weeps as her exhausted body dodges branches and maws of adversary dragons. The dragon stops in a clearing, clutching the only thing she still had of her mate's; the tiny shard of crystal made from their first nest. Drudwen had snapped it off right before the pair set off on their moving journey. A clever Bogsneak had convinced them to move realms into Shadow. He had promised them safety and solace, but all Rikaal found was misery and restlessness. Her mate was gone- seized by the very shadows they were supposed to call home.
Once Rikaal had made it into the clearing, she was met by happy, kind faces from the other denizens of this lair. She could not bring herself to smile back, her eyes welled with tears threatening to pour over her face. She said nothing for months, cooped up in the small crevice she was supposed to call her new home. Nothing can be her home without her beloved, wherever he may be. As more time passed, Rikaal slowly stared to accept her mateless fate and began roaming around her new den. Slowly, she would participate in small-talk with the others, specifically Enchantment, an Imperial who had suffered the same fate. Rikaal and Enchantment began spending more time together, bonding over heartache and helping each other in their own ways. The more time they spent together, the less the pain weighed on Rikaal. As the two shared stories, Rikaal became more wary of traveling outside of the nest to find her mate, as Enchantment enlightened her of the dangers outside of the Grove. She still ached for her mate and would often find herself staring into the abyss, but found, sometimes, the abyss stared back. And it had teeth. Rikaal spends her days tending to her clan members, returning the same kindness they showed her when she first arrived, although neglecting the welcoming the first time. She became revered in the clan for her resilience, and passed down stories to the hatchlings about the wonder and exhilarating life she had once lived. |
