Riparian's problem was that he never really understood what other dragons wanted from him. When he was little, he was eager to please - do this? Do that? Help here? But often he found himself overstepping boundaries and upsetting the dragons he was trying to befriend.

He asked his parents for help, but all of Carnage's advice was how to not let other dragons keep him from doing what he wants to do ("Live like a Zeyphr Sparrow! Offend everyone!"), and all of Prince's was a list of which dragons to stay on the good side of and which he could get away with provoking. That was not the help he asked for or the help he needed. His sister had better advice: try to read between the lines - look at body language and implied things, and try to go along with what you think they're saying.

But how could he know if they weren't actually saying anything? He started unhappily hanging to the side and relied on requests that were impossible to misinterpret, or letting Rivulet "translate" for him. He was the afterimage of someone actually helpful, always only a possibility or a memory of value.

Eventually he got tired of that. There are plenty of other dragons who are better at helping than he is, so there's no point in trying and failing all his life. In his new lair, he's away from his sister's influence, and so there's no one to stop him when he decides to take his mother's advice.

(He's still quite a ways from his full potential.)
