Biography

Nilakanta, the peaceful
"please, welcome to my clan! all are free to visit, if only they pursue peace over profit."

i. nilankanta is born to a pair of loving parents. she is the youngest of six hatchlings, and takes to following her elder siblings everywhere. her curiosity is insatiable. for several years, her life seems flawless to everyone—including herself.

ii. her father abandons them.

iii. nilakanta begins foraging and fighting early, in an attempt to help provide for her mother and siblings. it grieves her mother to watch her hatchlings grow up so quickly, but there is little else she can do: with such a large clutch and only one adult dragon, everyone must pull their weight. nilakanta learns the weight of responsibility early.

iv. winter comes, and nilakanta is starving. three of her siblings have already died in the bitter, hollow cold. her mother ingratiates herself to a nearby clan in an effort to secure food and shelter for the both of them. the clan is violent and strong, but provide for nilakanta and her siblings throughout the coldest months of the year. during her time with them, nilakanta witnesses vicious squabbles between clanmates and bloody clan clashes. she grows to dread them, as her mother will always return from battle with her thick pelt torn in patches. she can tell that her mother fears for their safety, although she will never admit it.

v. one evening, her mother does not return from a clan clash.

vi. "my name is kesthul," a massive imperial tells her, its neck arched as it looms above her in the night. distantly, she can hear the shrieks and wails of fighting dragons. "the battle is lost. come with me." together, she and the clan's other hatchlings are spirited away from the territory before they can be slaughtered by the enemy.

vii. when the enemy inevitably tracks them down, kesthul fights viciously to defend them. several of the hatchlings are lost, including nilakanta's remaining siblings. when kesthul collapses, panting, his wounds streaming with blood—he shelters her under his wing, and the enemy passes her by. only she, kesthul, and a young tundra named ormarr survive.

viii. once he recovers from his grievous wounds, kesthul takes the two of them far from their original territory and deep into the everbloom gardens. nilakanta and ormarr hunt for him while he heals, and sleep beneath his wings. he drives off all other dragons without remorse, and makes a terrible name for himself. when nilakanta is an adult in her own right, she disobeys him for the first time and befriends an outside dragon.

ix. "we can't be afraid of everyone forever, kesthul!" nilakanta cries, spreading her wings to catch the enraged imperial's attention. "i know you're scared. i understand. so am i! but i don't want to be afraid anymore. let me try, kesthul. we could have a clan here. we could take care of others like us."

x. after much convincing, kesthul yields to her. "fine," he growls. "but they're your responsibility. if you fail, if they hurt you or ormarr—i'll kill them all."

xi. nilakanta is now the leader of a small clan of dragons, and she tends to them with great joy and love. she refuses to tolerate inner-clan bickering, however, and is quickly to put a stop to any arguments. she is reluctant to engage in battles with other clans, either, and will only do it as a means of defense. she is known as the clan's peacemaker and is very skilled at resolving things without violence. she dreads the day she meets a battle she can't win passively: kesthul's watching eyes never let her forget what will happen if she fails.
