Kyros, the patriarch of the Wintertide Haven, has many facets to his personality. Overall, he is a just and kind leader - but he didn't become that way without working very hard indeed. He wasn't always a natural leader.

In fact, Kyros’ origins are far more humble. He came from a family of thieves, who were notorious in their area for not only their thefts, but kidnappings and rather grand-scale heists. Kyros grew up thinking that these things were perfectly normal, his family simply telling him that they were borrowing things from others. He even helped them sometimes, unaware of what he was truly doing.

But everything changed for Kyros when his family kidnapped a rich young Tundra female, close to his own age. He looked on at her determination to escape and admired it, and over time he began to understand that his family wasn't what he had thought. Shortly after this realization, he risked it all to help the Tundra female escape into the mountains, and through doing this, made his own escape as well. He was finally free of his family's terrible actions, but they would leave a lasting impact on him for a long time yet.

Kyros was unsure of what his next move would be now that he was alone. As it turned out, he didn't need to know. The Tundra female introduced herself as Seraphina, thanking him for helping her to escape, and Kyros asked her if she knew where she was going next. She admitted that she did not, and she was in an unfamiliar area of the mountains. So Kyros offered to help her again by temporarily guiding her through the mountains. What began as a strictly business relationship resulted in the two Tundras becoming friends, however, and they continued to travel together even when Seraphina was back in an area she knew. Finally Kyros had to admit it to himself and Seraphina - he had fallen in love. Seraphina surprised him by admitting in turn that the same thing had happened to her, and the two became mates.

When they finally stopped travelling, Kyros and Seraphina decided to build the Wintertide Haven, a clan to provide shelter and safety to travelers and take in those who wished to stay. It was a rocky start. Kyros wasn't a good leader at first: Seraphina had the qualities of being calm and patient, while he was used to getting what he wanted and doing things quickly and impulsively. Many days passed when Kyros simply couldn't handle the responsibilities of being the co-leader of the clan and hid from it all, or he was irritated by his clanmates. Many times he nearly turned to violence, just barely holding himself back with what little self-restraint he had.

Eventually, though, he began to change himself. Picking up on some of Seraphina’s traits that helped her and the clan, Kyros adapted them to fit him, and wore them like a warm cloak until they became a part of him. He even continued continued to better himself after this, gaining more positive traits as time went on. His clanmates developed more of a respect for him, and Kyros had in return a respect for them.

The one thing that would never change was Kyros’ deep hatred for thieves. He punishes both thieves and rulebreakers severely when he discovers them, and isn't afraid to cast them out of the clan on the most extreme occasions. And yet kindness does lurk within Kyros, as his friends and Seraphina know well. He simply reserves it for the right moments and dragons. Overall, Kyros is extremely grateful for Seraphina, and how she helped him to become a better dragon, and he will admit this to anyone. It is his hope that the Wintertide Haven will continue to flourish now that he feels capable of being a good leader for it.

Climbing

Kyros dug his talons into small cracks in the rock face, his own fur and the animal pelt he wore blowing in the fiercely cold wind as he climbed slowly higher up the rock face. Sometimes ice and snow impeded his progress and he had to climb sideways, or he had to push off of the cliff and beat his wings hard against the wind to move upward, but upward he did go. Eventually he reached the top of the cliff, and, shaking snow out of his mane, he continued onward and upward towards the peak of the mountain.

Dusk was approaching as he arrived. The perfect moment.

A beautiful burst of amber and yellow light, reflecting pink off the scattered clouds in the sky, was visible in the distance. The sunset. Kyros smiled to himself. He loved the Wintertide Haven, would do almost anything for them, but sometimes it was good to just have some time to himself. Some peace to watch a sunset and just think.

But as the sun faded from the sky, Kyros turned and unfurled his wings, stretching out his shoulders. No matter how much he enjoyed moments of quiet, his clan needed him, and he would always return to them. Return to them and Seraphina.
