~ From the journal of an old Skydancer ~

Entry 1:

I heard a story today from some traveling Spirals – it was about a lost baby Plague dragon. They told me that when when this Imperial was young, he was so distraught by the lives that fell to his flight's pursuits, he fled the Wasteland and ever since has been wandering Sornieth all alone.

I don't believe a hatchling could survive that long without a clan. Still, some say that he did eventually find some place to settle here on the Windswept Plateau. I've heard rumors that say his red eyes watch over the hatchlings as they brave the Ascent, making sure they don't get too close to the border of his old home.

But really, a Plague dragon sworn to protect others' lives? I can't imagine any Plague dragon committing a betrayal like that. Hmm... but the plague flight does seem to have been putting out an awful lot of search parties around Sornieth lately.... If the story's true and they do catch up to him... Windsinger help him.

Entry 2:

The group of Spirals returned today with more funny tales. The younger ones seem to enjoy them, but I prefer to focus on studying the stars. Sometimes I miss being being surrounded by fellow scholars and Arcane-folk, but this is my home.

I was somewhat bothered while I attempted to map out some new constellations today though. I couldn't stop thinking about the story about the Plague dragon that the Spirals had told me last time they were here. Yesterday, I saw a lone Imperial as I walked by the Ascent and I thought of attempting conversation. But he was very quiet, and as soon as I glanced in his direction he turned his head away. I figured I wouldn't bother him.

Now that I think of it though, I may have seen him there many times before.

Entry 3:

*Several lines of writing have been started at the top of the page, each one scribbled out more aggressively than the last. The entry finally starts on the 8th line.*

Today was a bad day. Several hatchlings went missing, most of whose families I know very well. Listening to their stories told through gasps and tears, I learned that these hatchlings were practicing at the Reedcleft Ascent when their parents lost sight of them.

Witnessing all the heartache, it hurts to realize that I can't do anything to help find them. I have no combat experience. My only skills are in scholarly studies and charting stars, something I now hate about myself.

I still don't know if I should tell them about what who I saw that day at the Ascent though. Is it fair to assume bad character based on nothing but a story? I don't want to wrongly condemn an honest dragon, but I also can't bear not to help these grieving families find their children. Oh dear Windsinger, what do I do?

Entry 4:

I decided not to tell the families about the mysterious Imperial. It's been over a week since the hatchlings went missing, and despite this I try to tell myself that I made the right choice.

Additionally, I've been thinking more seriously about the possibility that the story about the baby Plague dragon might be true, and if it is, that that Imperial I saw might truly be him. What if the hatchlings were taken by Plague? What if they were kidnapped as a part of some twisted plot by the flight to lure the Imperial back home. And once he went to rescue them... what would they do to him?

Entry 5:

A month after what I'm calling the kidnappings (but only to myself), the victims' families seem to have started going about their lives again, although much more quiet and reserved than before.

I walk by the Ascent every day hoping to talk with that Imperial, but he's never there. And the hatchlings there seem more hesitant than ever to climb the pillars.

Entry 6:

*The writing is scribbled and barely legible, clearly written in haste*

Oh dear journal, do I have news! That Imperial has come to me and asked for my help in navigation! Apparently he went to find the hatchlings in the Scarred Wasteland, but even in disguise the Plague dragons recognized him and tried to kill him (for treason I would assume). He put them off his tracks but said he needs a different route through the Wasteland away from patrols. I agreed to help. He told me to pack what I need and to hurry. I'm glad I didn't make this dragon into a suspect, he's done no wrong. I must leave, he's waiting for me. Oh and he said his name was Gilden. Funny name.

Entry 7:

I never thought a Plague dragon could be a hero. I managed to help Gilden through the Scarred Wasteland largely unseen, although I had to witness some gruesome battles along the way (some of which nearly made me sick) between Gilden and the few lone patrollers we were simply unable to avoid. The hatchlings were thankfully hidden far away from the nearest clan, but were trapped in a hole covered by an immovable boulder. For hours we dug a tunnel through the pestilent soil to reach the hatchlings. When we found them they were shaking and cowering, as I might be if I were trapped for weeks in a dark cavern, far from my home. Gilden carried them atop his shoulders all the way back through the Abiding Boneyard, calming and comforting them in a way I thought only a Nature dragon could.

I can't say I enjoyed the journey. I don't think I was meant for a survivor's life. But seeing the joyful spirit of the wind return to the families' eyes when we brought their little ones back made every minute I spent in the Abiding Boneyard a gift.

Gilden has been welcomed into my clan with open arms. He insists to Whisper that I was half of the reason the hatchlings are safe and that I should get some recognition, but I refuse the attention. I'm happy to return to the simple life of just me and my stars. Still, Gilden stops by every now and again to keep me company, and the Spirals never stop bringing their fanciful stories.

Now that we've accepted the very first Plague dragon into our clan, I predict that we'll be opening our metaphorical doors to more outcasts and strangers who have nowhere else to go. At least I hope that we will. I trust Whisper, but she can be sort of hard to read.
