Illyan began his life as an Imperial hatchling among Spiral playmates. While his mother attempted to teach him the stony demeanor of a proper Imperial, children tend to learn more from each other than the didactic advice of parents. Because of this, llyan became the foolish, energetic hatchling that his parents could have never expected him to be. An amalgamation of both Spiral and Imperial was born. He learned from the Spirals how to laugh, live, multitask, and fight, but the distant nature of his parents taught him how to center himself and strive for perfection. Both of these natures inclined him to throw himself into multiple, debilitating projects at one time, but his work was extraordinary and creative. The way his attention scattered created connections between his projects, and he was able to link and draw ideas from two or more of various fields of research. Renaissance man is the perfect way to describe the younger Illyan. He mapped the stars and studied their movements across the night sky. He tagged fish in the Sea of a Thousand Currents. He studied alchemy, and learned the craft well. But most of all, he studied the craft of magic and the Beastclans.

After unearthing exciting finds in both fields, he was hooked. Suddenly, there was a fire to buckle down and research. His early work was meticulous, but was not focused, and went slowly as a result. Now, Illyan had a drive to perfect a few areas, and began to try and become the best he could. This hyper-focus on a select few subjects has accentuated his perfectionist nature, and as a result every mistake pains him more than it has before. In an indoors situation, this behavior has the potential to be useful, but once Illyan learned all there was to learn about magic, he insisted on accompanying the coliseum party. Every mistake in battle was something that could injure his friends, and he realizes that they could die because of a mistake he makes. Illayn also came to the realization that no amount of study could possibly prevent this, but the more training he is able to get, the less of a burden he will be on his group, and the larger chance that he will be an asset to his friends instead.

Illyan ensures that every coliseum campaign is successful through his fastidious research of the behaviors of the Beastclans. Taking every measure to study their strategy, their arsenals of spells, their health, and their territory, Illyan has compiled a field guide on every Beastclan warrior he has ever encountered. While knowing the difference between a Maren Scout and a Maren Ambusher may not sound like a huge tactical advantage, he has more than once pinpointed the enemy that would put their party in the most danger if given the opportunity to strike.

In his free time, he still follows some secondary passions of his. As a junior geologist, he has a display case in his office full of rocks. Playfully self-deprecating, Illyan will make remarks about this, comparing himself to a hatchling. However, Illyan has made leaps and bounds in the world of geology, and discovered that there are volcanic fault lines beneath the Sea of a Thousand Currents. While he could never picture himself being a father figure for hatchlings, he puts in the time to play with any that come into his clan. The hatchlings all call him Uncle Illy. He loves to pull pranks on the older ones with them, and will even put in the time to explain his research to some of the more curious ones. He sees himself in these interested youngsters, and wants them to be able to shape their futures into bright ones.
