Journal Excerpt

Day 15
It's been more than a fortnight since I left home. I've finally reached the apex of the land, where the warmth of the Emberglow dissipates - the bamboo-crowded Steppes to the west and the crash of waves to the north. I will not miss the oppressiveness of home, neither the heat of the forges nor the weight of Mother's consideration. Her desire to see me betrothed to Thanatos, that bastion of male-Imperialness, will not come to pass as long as there is breath in my lungs.

Day 17
The pull of the wind was too great. Rather than chance the tides and tempests, I chose to venture into the Steppes. The scent of the breeze is cleaner than the salt-riddled air and I enjoy the sound the bamboo makes, lighter and sweeter than the drums and thrumming of the forges at home. Perhaps I can find a new life here.

Day 20
Disaster has befallen me. One misstep, climbing the fractured planes of the Ascent. The ground crumbled beneath me and I was sent plummeting towards the water far below, rapids crashing and sending spumes of spray high into the air. I caught myself at the cost of my leg. I lay now beneath a copse of bamboo, the leg held at an uncomfortable angle. I cannot walk upon it, nor can I drag myself into a position to fly. I cannot hunt, I cannot move farther. Unless something changes, I may starve here beneath the waving grass.

Day 21
Something may have changed in my favor. As I write this, I have my choice of food, a massive pile accumulated in my small bower. My savior, a Tundra who calls herself Possum, has spread a soothing salve on my leg, splinting it with long canes of bamboo and strips of bandage. Tomorrow, she says, we will return to her lair. I am apprehensive, but pleased to know I will not so readily perish. Possum is calling - I must go.

Day 35
I have not written for many days. Possum insists we travel slowly, taking special care for my shattered leg. She promises when we return to her home that she will have medicines for me, better healing tools. I am excited to see her home, to meet her family. I already feel as though I know this Tundra better than anyone in my home clan. We share a special kinship, and I now know with a certainty that I cannot express that I would have never been able to have become Thanatos's mate, that he would have been wholly unacceptable. I begin to wonder if perhaps Possum... but no. I shan't speak of that yet. For now I will only enjoy her company. She says we have three days left of travelling. I wish it were more.

Day 40
I have been here only two days, and already I feel more at home here than I ever did in my old clan. Possum watches over me, keeping my bandages changed and bringing me food from the hoard. And some nights, she lays by my side in the healer's chambers, watching over me while I sleep. Last night I awoke in the darkness and heard her steady breathing and have never felt safer. I hope, once I am healed, she will let me stay here.

Day 50
It seems like no time has passed at all since I left home, but also an eternity. My leg is healed, courtesy of Possum's magic. I feel hale and healthy, better than I have ever felt in my life. Joan, the clan leader, visited me in the healer's quarters today and asked me of my intentions. Possum has asked her permission to allow me to stay! For now, she says, I must earn my stay, digging in the wilderness with the gatherers, cleaning the lair. I don't care. I will do whatever it takes to stay here with Possum forever.
