Biography
How many wrongs does it take to make a right? He wronged his motherland, he wronged his bloodline. Cast out of his home for his crimes, yet still young and stubborn, Orpheus denied all accusations hurled at him, insisting on his own path. Being strong and agile, he knew that no dragons could raise walls high enough to stop him; as a vagabond, he felt powerful – blessed from birth and raised for greatness in Sornieth. Spoiled and vain, Orpheus wanted everything, and when something he desired was not offered, he took it by force. Eventually, one night, he got himself into a fight at the wrong time with the wrong dragon, and lost the blessing of strength that he had been born with. In the span of one hour, Orpheus lost nearly everything he held proud and dear. He could no longer boast or fight – his wings and claws failed him, and as he plummeted onto the ground, all those who he had abused in the past found him, and as a mob, made him pay back all that he owed. The pain was horrid, and the punishment was cruel: every single dragon of the mob tore a bite out of Orpheus’ wings, forcing him to roll with and dig for the worms and snails saying those were all that he was. A pest. Although Orpheus nearly died from the ordeal and had little time to flee, his will to live was still strong and vivid, and when it was over, he fled like a coward for his life. He ran for as long he could… As far as he could get without flying… As much as he could press forward without collapsing on the ground and giving in. He was found. His rescuers were complete strangers who owed him nothing, yet they spared him. They did not know his story but found it cruel what the others had done with his wings. He was nursed back to life. He was too weak and too hurt to really talk, to find joy in life as he had before. The clan, seeing him immobilized and silenced thus, thought that he was mute. They offered him a place to rest and recover. The urge inside Orpheus to live forbade him from rejecting the offer. He ate and slept, growing stronger, but his wings never regenerated enough to give him back his freedom. However, as he regained some of his strength, the stubbornness in his blood returned, and he refused to resign himself to a life of disability. Craving revenge, he vowed to live and recover; however, as he spent more and more time with the clan, he learned of their ways and ideas, and slowly started to see things from new points of view. Eventually, Orpheus learned of the Arcane flight and its power; hesitant but hopeful, he asked for help, wondering if he could get his wings back. The clan leader heard him out and accepted to help in return for Orpheus’ support of the clan. What Orpheus needed to offer was open; it could be anything he could give. Orpheus decided to offer his strength and endurance; he took on the role of a Protector on the ground against the beast clans. Orpheus turned out to be an effective Protector. While he might not be able to fight as a dragon with elegance, he made up for what he lacked with his mind and quick senses. He studied his enemies extensively, learning their moves, habits and patterns, preparing himself against their attacks whenever they came. The clan held true to their side of the bargain, and tried to perform a ritual to give Orpheus back his wings. With the touch of the stars itself, Orpheus’ wings healed, leaving marks over it by the starry night. Orpheus almost regained his ancient blessing, too, but what was lost could not be gifted back. He could never fly again - only to float on the back of the wind. Orpheus accepted his Fate at last. Nothing could be changed but at least he had a place to call home. He helped at the nests, guarded the eggs and the young - and assisted the clan by providing it with ideas and strategy. Slowly, bit by bit, he mellowed out as well, letting the past go and stepping back from the spotlight to live a peaceful, quiet life. Orpheus had stopped expecting rewards, gifts, or miracles; but one day upon a dream he found solace again with a female whom he settled down with. He had lived a long, rough life – the path he walked had been long, almost endless – but now, he has finally reached its destination, and found peace and bliss. |
