i n t r o d u c t i o n

The change of a dragon is not a decision to be taken lightly. Those in the clan who have taken the chance struggle at first but they have emerged content with their new identity. Others, like Tadeo, have not been so lucky. Soon there would be another like him.

Erys was born in another clan, left to starve and nameless. Once she had matured she was put up for sale. Armel and Talulla were the ones who saw her and concerned with her state hurried back to Elmissa for advice.

Upon hearing of yet another poor dragon's fate Elmissa immediately sent Horacio and Esmeralda to collect her. Once she was nursed to health, and given a name, Elmissa offered the Nocturne two options. She could stay with them or serve the Icewarden. Erys chose the former.

As time went on, Erys became exhausted with herself. She resented those of her breed in the clan who found it easy to mimic the characteristics of their clanmates. There was Griselda, who had a charge and Charlotte and Nicki who had taken after Alva's frivolous behavior of a performer. Erys had never the chance to adapt to her clan of origin—she had been shunned.

Others began to notice her behavior and advised her to seek counsel from Clara or one of the Casters. Instead she turned to Skyler. He was not like the other Nocturnes and she wished to know why. He explained when he'd been born to the clan he found himself drawn to those souls who were suffering after their metamorphosis. He, like many of the other Nocturnes born at that time, was in close proximity to them and so restrained himself from the act of mimicry whenever dealing with their clanmates. It was a tumultuous time for the clan and such behavior might not be looked on well.

Satisfied with her answer Erys retired to consider the information. She began to take note of the others in her clan. She didn't understand the large Guardians with their need to find a charge. The Ridgebacks much less with their affinity for tunneling and the spirals whose energy drained her. But then there was Ilario and Agapito—calm souls. She wouldn't mind being like them.

So she turned to Almeria with a request for change. She asked for spots to hide her scars and spines so as to not miss her natural ones. Once the necessary funds were drawn, Almeria and the other casters gathered the necessary scrolls.

The magic was performed and Erys waited eagerly for the transformation to occur. The spots came first, adding depth to her colors, then the spines which were painful to grow out, and finally the last change which would alter her drastically. When the process was complete the realization of her choice dawned on her. She had lost her wings.

She turned to the casters with fury and resentment in her heart for they had not informed her of this confinement. She screamed in agony and attacked. She attempted battle for hours, forcing the clan's casters to deflect or absorb her attacks so as to avoid damage to the lair. When at last her strength gave way Elmissa decreed she only be around mages, healers, and those who had gone through the change like her. No other dragon was allowed to approach.

The casters keep her company, tending to her wounds which refuse to heal. Tadeo brings her gifts from his travels. Armel and Talulla dine with her, telling stories of their patrols. And Skyler takes her on walks which last for days, speaking at length of what the future holds for her.

She listens with a weary heart and waits.
