Biography

Cleansing Tonic VIKA Major Health Potion
The Medicine Mixer
Mixes Mayhem

"This? Energy tonic! Or uncontrollable burping. Or kills you. I forgot! "

monument_lightning.png
Vika is very good at brewing many medicinal mixtures and potions at once. Vika is very bad at brewing each potion correctly every time. She may know how to brew each potion, but her claws may unknowingly slip the right ingredients into the wrong potions, leading to unexpected (and sometimes amazing) results.

The clan doesn't need to worry, according to her beloved. Almost every potion is tested before it is given to anyone. Besides, Vika is confident she knows what every one of her potions does. Where every potion is is a different matter altogether.

Case Study

(The events below are a dramatized retelling of a real case handled by the clan's medical department.)

VK is an adult female lightning spiral, presenting to the medical department, unresponsive, unmoving, but breathing.

Lowered gravity can cause the heart to become weaker, as it does not have to pump as hard to maintain proper circulation. This can result in low blood pressure and fainting when returning to normal gravity. This is common in the Starfall Isles, and can be prevented by increased physical activity. But the medical team finds VK's blood pressure to be normal.

This is when a nurse notices VK's stiff body. Spirals are known for collapsing from exhaustion, but their bodies remain flexible when they do. This is why spirals sometimes discover that their less ethical clanmates have tied them around something while they were passed out. What is causing the stiffness?

The medical team suspects a seizure. A tonic seizure causes muscles to lock, causing stiffness, and may be accompanied by unconsciousness. But these seizures typically last a few minutes, and dragons typically regain consciousness once it ends. The dragons that brought VK in say she was already unconscious when they found her. They don't know VK, and cannot confirm if VK has a history of seizures.

A prolonged seizure can cause irreparable brain damage. The medical team immediately administers medication with an IV.

Assistants frantically look through VK's things, trying to piece together what happened while doctors monitor her condition.

VK came to the Starfall Isles to study and develop potions. Like most students, she was fueled by caffeine. A little boost to keep her going until the next breakthrough.

She didn't think much of her habits. No one gets enough sleep, especially when there is work to be done. If everyone does it, it must be normal, right?

A few hours ago, VK visited a local coffee shop. This shop had just begun to offer glowing pink stirring sticks made of magical shards as well as the typical wooden ones.

She was instructed to use a wooden stick, but she was distracted by a laughing group of nature dragons. The magical shards had turned their drinks bright pink, which looked fun. A plague dragon sneered at them, two pink sticks poking out of their cup.

Non-arcane dragons can use the pink sticks just fine, VK thought. The nasty barista just didn't want her to have a fun pink coffee. She took one of the glowing sticks to stir some pink and sugar into her drink.

The pink coffee didn't energize her as much as expected. The coffee here must be weak, VK thought. Her body was already resistant to caffeine from her regular coffee drinking. She thought she needed five more cups. And five more bright pink stirrers.

VK left the shop, full of pink coffee. She had enough energy to zoom back to her mobile workstation. The coffee gave her some new ideas- potions infused with magic.

She felt fatigue as she raced off to gather ingredients. She thought it must be exhaustion. Just a normal part of being a spiral.

Her collapsed form was found by some passing dragons. She was brought to a nearby clan for care, where she is being examined by the medical team now.

Things are starting to go wrong. VK is starting to have difficulty breathing. Lumps form on her chest as the medical team finally realizes what is wrong with her.

Dragons cannot survive without magic. As a lightning dragon, VK's magic takes the form of electricity, or the flow of electrons.

The forces inherent to Arcane magic are capable of ripping the electrons off atoms, scattering them in the form of beta radiation.

Precautions such as warding or neutralizing spells may be taken to help non-arcane dragons withstand damage from the atmospheric magic. But VK consumed six cups of infused coffee infused with arcane magic.

VK's heartbeat is now irregular. The energies in her coffee she drank are disrupting the flow of electrons inside her body, inhibiting the function of her organs. Like her brain, causing unconsciousness. Like her lungs, causing difficulty breathing. Like her heart.

The foreign magic needs to be removed from VK's body immediately.

The doctors quickly replace the IV with a saline solution infused with lightning magic as she is rushed to surgery. The surgeon slices one of the lumps on her body open, confirming the team's fears.

Pink crystal. Solidified Arcane energies, the cause of VK's stiffness. Had the magic not solidified, a mage could have easily removed it.

VK is running out of time. The chance of fatal organ damage increases as the crystals inside her body grow.

The surgeon stablizes the crystal growths, preventing further damage. He starts removing the crystal, bit by tiny bit. He checks and fixes any damage to VK's internal structures as he goes.

Hours pass. The last crystals are removed. Mages are brought in, they cannot detect any arcane energies within VK. Her surgical wounds are closed with healing spells.

With the disruptions to her natural magic gone, her body can start to replenish it. As the days pass, the level of lightning magic in her body slowly returns to normal.

VK finally opens her eyes. She is panting, pained, weakened, but alive. She will make a full recovery after a few weeks of rest.

But before that, she will wrap her body around the surgeon that saved her and tell him that her life now belongs to him.
