Roshon
A Glorious Charge

An enormous Guardian trades blows with the air in a large, dirt-floored cavern, the light from many tiny holes in the ceiling highlighting the dust motes that circle his crimson scales. Breathing hard, he finishes his routine and plants his feet, stretching gently forward and back as his body cools and calms. As the exercise-concentration clears from his eyes, a curious display of emotions crosses his face, excitement and contentment giving way to worry. He bellows once, suddenly, the roar seeming to shake the room; more dust falls from the ceiling.

From afar, muffled and filtered by thousands of tons of earth, an answering roar is heard. His face clears, showing calm and contentment again, at least on the surface. Somehow, the expression doesn't completely reach his eyes.

Folding his wings carefully and without a backward glance, the Guardian crosses to the far wall and ducks his head to pass through into a connecting tunnel.

As is the case with many Guardians, Roshon came to Clan Stonehearth's lands while on his Search.

When Roshon first arrived and was welcomed into the Clan, he fell immediately and completely in love with Shakreth, a similarly-Chargless Guardian female living and working as the Beastclan mediator of Stonehearth. For quite a while, he believed she was his Charge, and he, hers; he is under the impression that a Charge must be one other living thing, and is a hopeless romantic. When Bastalon arrived in the Clan a year later, broken and grieving, and Shakreth discovered that he was her Charge, Roshon was, understandably, crushed. Of course, Shakreth's love for Bastalon is entirely platonic and almost motherly, but try as she might, she could not explain this to Roshon, who remained unconvinced and jealous. In an attempt to prove himself physically superior (as though that would make a difference), Roshon left the Clan for a year in order to train with a warlike Clan of their acquaintance, Clan Whuffie.

He came to enjoy the fighting much more than he ever expected. Though he has very little bloodlust, the physical feeling of battling: the stretching muscles, the roars ringing in his ears, the blood pumping frenetically through his large frame, even (or especially) the lack of self that happens when all attention is focused on the task at hand; all of these combined to make him the happiest he ever felt, although he often found himself wishing that Shakreth could be there with him. His camaraderie with his Mire-mate Fenris and his leader Delenn had an unexpected effect, as well: he began to become aware of the different forms of love and devotion. This was enhanced by his off-hours, wherein he spent a large amount of time with the seemingly endless dragonets of Clan Whuffie. Though part of a large clutch himself, once he left his nest, he had not had much contact with younglings, and he was startled by the joy he found in taking care of them, and even staging mock battles. He surprised himself by seriously considering staying with the Clan in order to take care of them, though ultimately, he still felt a pull back towards Stonehearth and his mate, if not his Charge.

His time with Clan Whuffie happily spent, he returned to Stonehearth brimming with stories and a newfound understanding and respect for himself, as well as battling prowess. And he did not return alone; a Wetland Unicorn grazing on the edge of Whuffie territory overheard the stories he told the dragonets about his mate and her dealings with the Beastclans who lived near their lands, and decided to travel with him in order to foster more friendship between Stonehearth and her hooved brethren. Shakreth was overjoyed to meet them both, and her continued devotion to Roshon cemented his newfound understanding of the division between romantic and platonic love. He remains vaguely jealous of the relationship between Shakreth and Bastalon, but now it comes solely from his frustration at not having a Charge of his own, instead of worries about losing his love. Though he would describe himself as happy, he still feels unfulfilled, constantly on the edge between discovery and despair.

Privately, Shakreth and a few other members of the Clan believe that Roshon has already discovered his Charge and has yet to realize it: the protection and training of dragonets, and their safe passage to adulthood. The problem is, of course, that in recent years the birthrate of the Clan has mysteriously declined; Shakreth herself was one of the last dragonets born in Stonehearth. The Clan grows only by children given to them by the Centaurs of the adjacent territory, with whom they have formed an alliance. And so Roshon has not fully understood his Charge, having had so few dragonets to raise. He could, of course, move on to another Clan and raise children there; however, his love for Shakreth keeps him here, and so he remains in confusion. Perhaps, if he ever discovers his Charge, he will be the one to find out why the Clan is barren.
