"I know where my loyalties lie. Don't you?"

Firelight dances across the crumbling walls of the old fort. Anansi rests within reach of the flames, coiled as comfortably as she can be on the cracked stone floor, and watches Anamika as he trembles and quakes through a fitful sleep. “It never fails to astound me that he trusts you enough to fall asleep in your presence,” Hypatia comments. Her wings are folded tightly against her body in an effort to stave off nighttime’s chill. “Then again, I wouldn’t have expected Secunda to send you to look after him, either. They’re both rather naive, aren’t they?” Anansi casts a sidelong glance at her. “I’ve never given either of them reason to suspect me of anything,” she points out. “As far as he knows, I’m here to keep anything from happening to him - and that’s all I care for him to know, anyhow.” “Still,” Hypatia taps pointed claws against the ground idly, “you have to wonder how long it will take before she notices something’s awry. It isn’t easy to hide the severity of a Shade infestation like that,” nodding towards the shivering imperial, “unless she isn’t visiting him at all. And I suspect she will visit him. She’s soft like that. She was soft like that with the bogsneak, too, temperamental beast that he was.” “I don’t doubt it.” The spiral’s pupils are mere slits. “But by the time she realizes it’s a problem, everything should have progressed beyond her ability to fix. Just wait and see - as soon as one of her advisors changes their mind, the clan will turn on her.” Across the fire, Anamika shudders and drags his claws against the ground, half-raising his head. “Fes… Secunda?” he keens, eyes squinted against even the dim glow of the fire. Curling tendrils of black obscure his sclera and seep out along the seams of his scales like smoke, vanishing before they touch the ground. “Who’s…” “It’s still just me,” Anansi says, blunt and unsympathetic. “Go back to sleep.” “I was dreaming,” he protests, voice thick with exhaustion. “Where’s Secunda?” “She’s with Sunfalle. Where else?” “I thought maybe she was going to visit me,” Anamika offers in a plaintive whine. Anansi’s expression flickers into something like disgust for a moment, only, before her face falls into its usual impassive mask as he continues. “She said she was going to try and find someone to help. Someone to fix me.” “And maybe she has. But not at two in the morning,” Anansi remarks dryly. “Are you staying?” he asks. “I don’t - I don’t want to be alone here. It doesn’t feel right. There’s all kinds of whispers.” Hypatia looks between his face and the vestiges of Shade that pulsate under his scales, shoots a significant look towards Anansi, who curls her lip to show just a hint of teeth and says, “Of course I’m staying. Go back to sleep.” Hypatia’s eyes glow faintly as she wreathes another spell of sleep over the imperial, this time one that will prevent waking from dreams entirely. He quivers in place as it takes effect, then drops his head back down to rest on his forepaws, eyes sliding shut. Within minutes, his breathing evens out. Silently, Anansi gets to her feet and waves a claw to snuff out the fire. Under the velvet cloak of night, the spiral and the nocturne take to the air and wing away from the ruined lair, leaving Anamika behind. |
