Many stories do not begin with greatness.

The most famous kings and queens are those from a humble, troubled background. Their lives begin at the metaphorical 'Rock bottom' and they slowly rise to the top through perserverance and elbow grease. Everybody knows or has read a story like that. And it is only rarely that one's entire life takes a downward spiral after being born at rock bottom.

But that is what happened to Sanguine.

Born to a mother who didn't care about him and a father that he never knew, he was left in the deserted boneyard when he was barely out of the egg. Left to fend for himself, the one sister he had soon died to lack of sustenance and shelter. He learned then that survival meant being resourceful, while leaving her small body for the vultures as bait. The scavenger birds were his first meal in this life, and so hungry was he, that he did not even think to pluck them before devouring them. To this day, he would despise the taste of vulture meat.

He grew up alone, traveling the world of Sornieth and becoming self sufficient quickly. He did eventually find a clan that took him in and provided for him, giving him a brief taste of what normal life should be like. He was hired as an alchemist for a Light clan, and that was his first step into forgetting the horrors of his early days.

But the past has a way of haunting those who turn their backs to it. A fateful encounter with his mother resulted in an injury that would give him a physical reminder of his misery, borne of the will to please his mother fighting for dominance with the hatred he felt for her. The injury drove him to become a hermit, but oddly enough it had also brought him the one constant in his life; his younger brother, Silas.

Silas heard of Wretch's encounter with her first son after she returned from it, and he left the nest before his mother had a chance to kick him out as she had done with Sanguine. Distracted by her injury, Wretch barely noticed his departure. Silas found Sanguine, and has not left his side since, admiring his brother's strenght and boldness, he now helps him in whatever way he can. Though if you heard him complain, you'd never guess he's doing it voluntarily. Although he would never admit it, Silas has kind of grown on Sanguine, kind of like that boil you suddenly develop that's a pain in the backside, but you learn to live with it.

Now, so many years later, only Sanguine's limp and the scar remain to remind of his youthful arrogance. The wound never healed properly, but he has become accustomed to the pain it causes. For years, Sanguine and Silas travelled from place to place, never staying anywhere too long in the hopes of avoiding a repeat encounter with Wretch and her clan.

But now they have not heard from her in such a long time that Sanguine begins to become convinced that his wretched mother has died, or has at least let go of her grudge against him. All this time, there had been no sign of her, or of anyone watching them with any special interest. And after so many years, he feels the call of his homeland stronger than ever. To take his rightful place in the lands of the Plaguebringer and show everyone, not just his family, that he is still a force to be reckoned with and that he will earn the right to stand among the greatest survivors.

Not all stories begin with greatness, but Sanguine is determined his story will end with it.
