heartbroken | bitter | kindhearted

you find a small book lying on the ground. you skim over the dog-eared pages until a small slip of paper falls out. Picking it up, your brow furrows in confusion. it appears to be an ink drawing of an imperial with laugh lines around his eyes and a happy smile on his face. the ink appears to be smudged in a few spots, like someone had spilt water on the paper. you neatly fold the picture back up and set it back into the journal, but the page catches your eye. Suddenly overcome by curiosity, you open the book wider begin to read the shaky lettering.

i love him.
even now, i still love him. i have seen his downfall, starting with the strange mood swings and black discharge until he became the.. the grotesque beast he is now.
farore hadn't seen it. she wasn't there when he writhed in pain on the floor. she wasn't there when the razor sharp thorns buried themselves deep in his soft belly, drawing blood and helpless whimpers from his gaping muzzle. (or had they come from within his belly?)
she was a coward. unwilling to be with her mate while he lost his grip on reality. but i wasn't scared of him. i was there for xe. i held him and sang soft lullabies into his ear, trying to reassure us both that he'd be okay, that he'd get through this.
i'm.. beginning to think i lied to him.

there's a pause here, and ink blotting out the rest of the page. the next few pages are mindless doodles and notes, and the next entry is barely legible through the unsteady handwriting.

i dont.. know what to do. farore won't talk to me, and everybody else keeps their distance. he's getting worse, but i don't know how to help him! he's still in there, i know it, i can see it during his calmer moments. there's just.. something inside him, causing him to act this way. maybe it's a parasite, maybe its a virus, maybe its the shade- i dont know. i just.. i know i have to get help soon, because i can't lose him.
i won't lose him.
