Biography
Uh-oh, looks like this ambitious Spiral wandered a little too far from his lair (164666, Akkisuitok), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.
Alum
Travelling Engineer Male | Unmated Dragon | Born into Thornhall Clan Alum was an apprentice to Althea and Brashen, who helped out with all sorts of experiments while also learning the tricks of the trade from the two engineers of the Thornhall Clan. After all their own children never showed any interest in their parent's crazy work, they were quite glad to get a helping hand in the curious Spiral. Once he had learned all he could from them, Alum decided to set out on his own. Visiting clans around Sornieth, he hopes to learn the secrets of their technology while sharing his own talents. |

Making his way to the Reedcleft Ascent to work on an experiment having to do with the strong wind currents in the area, Alum met another traveller also in the pursuit of knowledge. The two of them worked hard to harness the power in the wind, while also enjoying each others' company in an otherwise unscientific clan. Finding a common interest, the two decided to continue on together, at least for a while, while they continued their research elsewhere. ~ Arriving at the clan of Voiceless Reverence, Alum was only able to set up a shop for a day, before realising that the clan members had no need of his services at the current time. ~ Since his journey back took him along the path of his original home clan, he stopped by briefly to check in on his formers employers, and to stock up on new supplies. Full of enthusiasm he set off again. ~ He flew across the ocean from the Ashfall Waste to the Southern Icefields and spotted a unique granite hill with glasslike tubes running into and out of holes bored into it. He slithered up to the tubes, curious about them as he saw scroll cases shooting up the pipes. A blue coatl wearing goggles gently strode up to him. "Beautiful, isn't it? We have to keep the air inside chilled so that it doesn't develop pressure issues, but other than that, it works like a charm. Say, I haven't seen you around- are you by any chance one of those wandering dragons?" "Aye. I'm a bit of an engineer myself; was just taking a moment to figure out what this was for. And maybe why you went with scrollcases instead of just having voicepipes installed throughout your lair." Piccolo smiled. "We have a few things that need confidentiality. Can't have eavesdroppers now can we? Do come inside, it's much more impressive in there... Along with some of my other gadgets." Alum joined her in the lair, met with the different engineering talents, stayed a while helping them with their work. Eventually there was little he could improve on, and so he left. But not without a a scarf and a pair of handwarmers from Gloria, a very maternal Snapper concerned about him traveling in the cold. ~ Alum spent a month or so in the Shatterstone Clan working with the clan's unofficial engineer, Melilot. He helped her tune up all of the clan's machines that had sat in need of work for months and did far more repairs than he was expecting to do in an Earth clan. The previous engineer had recently left the clan, leaving Melilot with more work than she had time to do, so she appreciated the help Alum could offer. ~ Finding himself in another Arcane clan wasnt ideal. Alum's skills where not really something the clan had ever concidered. He offered advice here and there on what could be done to automate a few of the clans areas. During his stay the clan Blacksmith was more than happy to listen to him talk of machines. The coatl seemed genuinaly interested. All too soon though it was time for Alum to leave and continue his travels. ~ Finally one day in May, Alum found himself swept along into the Viridian Labyrinth with a host of other dragons preparing for the upcoming Greenskeeper Gathering festivities. Many of the dragons he traveled with intended to pledge their service to the Gladekeeper in her flight's bid for dominance of the realm, but Alum had no interest in such things. Instead, he found shelter in the sprawling gardens of a clan of nature dragons, under the canopy of the great Behemoth. Being a nature dragon by birth himself, he was welcomed warmly, and invited to stay for the duration of the festival. Despite their lack of more sophisticated technology and their aversion to metal machinery, the clan was able to show him their clever use of natural materials to create what they needed. Their system of moving bamboo chutes used for the transport of collected rainwater was of particular interest to Alum. With his engineering expertise, he was able to help them refine the complicated system, removing redundant parts, and increasing the efficiency of the rest so that more gardens could be irrigated using the least number of chutes. To thank him for his help, the clan's matriarch, Fern, gave him gifts of food and the Bladed Flatleaves that were treasured by all nature clans, especially during their Greenskeeper festival. He left with a greater understanding of natural building materials, feeling rejuvenated and ready for whatever awaited him next on his travels. |
