basics She tries—and fails—not to shake as she takes her first step towards destiny. There is fear of the unknown in her heart, and though this is what she was born to do, what she was created for, her destiny is still unknown. "Are you ready, love?" A voice calls to her, cheeriness in its tone that Merchannwyl has not heard since she was much smaller. "Father, I—" She starts, turning from the mouth of the cave to face her creator. Any words she might have said died before they passed her teeth as she looked upon his face, shrouded in a hood much like the one she wore. He smiled to her kindly with a mouth she knew was capable of tearing lives apart if she refused her destiny now. Merchannwyl breathes deeply the frigid air of her home and nods in agreement. "Then let us go," The Archangel says, pulling on her half-filled satchels—everything she owns—to lead her out of the cave. To the Vogelzang. To freedom. Merchannwyl does not shake. |

Merchannwyl was born to be a bargaining chip from the Archangel to the Vogelzang--that much she knew was true. One of their leaders--Humboldt--had incurred the Archangel's wrath with his bond of friendship to Sappho, her mother. He sided with the traitorous rebellion alongside her, leading secret aid to their cause by hunting down and eliminating Herne's spies, thwarting his attempts to seek out their location so he could destroy them. A truce, the exchange of bloodlines, supposed to keep the uneasy peace between the Vogelzang and the Archangel, but this was never what it was truly meant to do. Humboldt, the Archangel told his daughter, would never uphold his end of the bargain. Shadow dragons should never be trusted, he warned her, lying came to them as easily as breathing--they were treacherous and unsavory folk that wouldn't wait for your back to be turned before they struck. He would have Merchy strike them first. The exchange took place on neutral ground, above the waves of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. This would be her first look at Vogelzang's leader--Humboldt, her father's bane, perched atop the head of the mirror Enoki. |
