"Whoever the Trauco chooses who will go to him, even if she is sleeping, and fall enraptured at his feet. No woman can resist his magical attraction." - Source
Entirely the color of midnight, a Nocturne slipped quietly into the cave through an entrance that had never been used. He blended into cavern walls as he silently explored the twisting tunnels. He found a small cave that was unoccupied and nodded in approval. "This will do."
THE FIRST
AltissimaQuaeque
Latin for "deep things"
DEEP NIGHT
Altissima blinked into the darkness. Where am I? She looked around, but could barely see in the inky blackness. She reached out a wing and felt the smooth surface of their obsidian walls. Still in the wyer... The room felt unfamiliar. She definitely wasn't in her own cavern. She shook her head to clear her mind. That was a weird dream... Images floated through her mind, infused with mixed feelings of terror and pleasure. She shook her head again. It was too dark and late to try to figure out where she was. She decided to just spend the night there.
DEEP SHAME
A loud screech sent everyone in the wyer to Altissima's cavern. As soon as one entered, they realized the source of despair. On the floor of the young Fae's room were three freshly laid eggs. Hers. Altissima was curled up in a corner, out of despair and shame.
DEEP BLAME
The eggs hatched. Two male Faes and a female Nocturne. The only Nocturne male in the Wyer was Keedan. Altissima went storming out of her room, leaving the hatchlings to fend for themselves, their cries echoing down the tunnel. In the main cavern she confronted Keedan, yelling without listening. For a Fae to show visible emotion was rare, but every dragon could see her anger. Keedan's mate, Sasha, looked confused. Serlee and Amadeus came flitting over to see what the commotion was. The wyerlings on Iolite were shocked into silence; there had never been such an altercation in the wyer before. Sasha finally figured out what was happening and jumped to Keedan's defense. "HE WASN'T EVEN HERE!" Everyone stopped yelling to stare at the normally quiet Sasha. "He was out hunting. Remember? That was the month he went all the way to the Southern Icefield. He wasn't here. It wasn't him." Stunned silence filled the wyer. If not Keedan, then who?
DEEP SORROW
By the time anyone remembered the hatchlings, two had gone on to the Shadow Mama. Only the little Nocturne remained. Soon, Altissima followed suit.
THE SECOND
Nyneve Nyneve was the second victim. After Altissima had accused Keenan, he started staying away from the wyer on longer and longer hunting trips. Yet, somehow, another Fae had eggs, with no mate. Nyneve had been exploring a mostly unused tunnel, and systematically clearing out small caves, to help their ever expanding wyer. She had fallen asleep one night in an empty wyer. Her little ones were both Faes, and she let them go to other wyers.
THE THIRD
Desdemona
Greek for "ill-starred"
Desde was a visitor to the Obsidian Wyer from Nature. Her goal was to travel through Sorneith, spending a month or so in each of the regions. During her second night in the Obsidian Wyer, she was wandering through the back tunnels when she felt someone's gaze on her. She turned, but saw nothing. The light from her torch reflected only the obsidian walls back at her. She continued walking. She continued to feel as if she was being watched. She poked her head around a corner and saw that it was a small cave. As she was about to back out and continue onward, a warm gust blew out her torch. She was in darkness. Out of the darkness a voice spoke to her. It was velvety and deep, and made her weak at the knees. "You came to me." No, I didn't... but, maybe... Was that why she was here? "Come to me." Of course that was why she had come. It had always been her idea. Hadn't it? Desde woke up back in her guest bed in the main cavern. She was heavy with eggs. And she remembered. She started trying to tell anyone who would listen. No one would. Except Ruru. Ruru was intrigued. She listened to Desde's tale and asked her questions. They explored the tunnels together until she recognized the right cave. When her children hatched, Ruru was sure. Another Nocturne baby, just like Altissima's and Nyneve's. Ruru abruptly stopped talking to her and Desde started to despair. She went to Elema and begged her to accept her and her children. Elema stood there, entirely quiet, stoic almost, as the Ridgeback bawled on the floor in front of her. After Desde ran out of tears, Elema touched her head gently, and turned and walked away to the temple. Desde took her children and followed. The Cult. |
