Emkayh
The Dreamwalker
compassionate | faithful | protective

For all of recorded history, dreams have been viewed as a powerful tool of the mind. Some see them as visions of the future, while others see the past. Some have viewed them as omens sent from the gods and others as a more meaningless processing of our knowledge. No matter what your views are, the following story recounts how Emkayh learned the true purpose and power of dreams.

A vast ocean lay before him, smooth as glass. The sunset reflected perfectly on the surface to the point that it was impossible to tell where the sky ended and the ocean began. The feeling of serenity rippled across his body. All was quiet and peaceful, though he couldn't help but feel something was missing. Though he did not feel anything was truly wrong or that danger was near, a strong feeling was rooted in his heart.

Loneliness.

The feeling of awkward serenity gradually and inexplicably began to subside as a faint noise could be heard. The sound amplified over time until he could make out a voice, though initially unintelligible. He tried to focus less on his surroundings and more on the voice. Finally he heard its message: Hello, Emkayh. I am here.

His eyes open and adjust to the dim lighting of his room in Caster's Cavern. Though vibrant, glowing veins of infused ore illuminated the room, it was a far cry from the glorious rainbow of color he just experienced. The dream felt so real and the voice was so comforting and familiar, yet he could not pair a face with the voice. Could it truly have been only a dream? The smells, sights, and sounds were far too real, along with the feelings he experienced. How could something so real be all in his head?

Curiosity seemed to get the better of him, so he decided to speak to one of the elders within Clan Caster. Namine must have an answer for him. Though Emkayh had yet to find his Caster ability, there was never any question of his place in the clan. Jack had lead the hunt to track him down, just as he has with most of the members of the clan. Not all have discovered their reason for being there, but his visions of those with a Cast had never been wrong. Perhaps Namine could answer some of these questions, but if not he could at least calm his nerves.

As he entered Namine's cove, he immediately felt a calm sweep over him. This feeling was all too familiar as he had felt it many times before; Vanitas, Namine's mate, always cast her own peacefulness to anyone nearby while in the Caverns. There was never a need to announce yourself to either of them since she could sense anyone's emotions the moment they came near. The couples' bond was so strong that Namine knew how to sense the fine changes in his emotions associated with Vanitas' ability. Emkayh approached him and began to discuss his dream and the senses associated with it in vivid detail.

Once he finished, Namine smiled and said "Welcome to the other realm."

Puzzled, Emkayh's mind filled with a hundred questions. He couldn't quite understand the statement that was just uttered and didn't even know where to start with the flurry of queries all fighting to be asked. Namine could sense the confusion and glanced at Vanitas, who immediately assisted in calming the roaring storm in Emkayh's mind.

Emkayh could finally make sense of the questions and decided to begin with: "What do you mean by 'the other realm'?"

Namine takes a breath and begins to explain. "There are many things that are still a mystery to all of dragon-kind, but a select few have discovered the Realm of Dreams. We are all tied together in this world through a vast network of connections. While many dragons never discover the purpose to their lives, there is still a reason that they existed on Sornieth. If you remove a single individual from this network, the entire web of existence would disintegrate.

"The Realm of Dreams is a delicate world that doesn't follow every law that exists in this reality. Travel can occur instantaneously; Gravity is relative; Even your own appearance can be altered. Virtually anything is possible in the Realm.

"While some of the gifted few who have discovered this realm, referred to as Dreamwalkers, use it solely as a way to escape into a world of fantasy and possibilities, others have discovered a more purposeful use of the Realm. Your purpose there has obviously not yet been discovered, but your presence there will no doubt cause it to be revealed."

Emkayh just stares for a moment in awe of the details he just heard. He has barely scratched the surface of exploring this world and now he has access to another of infinite expanse. What could this opportunity lead to? What should he explore first? Would he meet others in the Realm?

Wait...the voice...who was behind this mysterious message? Emkayh suddenly realizes that he is still in the presence of Namine and Vanitas. He looks at Namine and asks, "Could there be others who know me in the Realm?"

"There are other Dreamwalkers from this world," he replies, "though I am not familiar with anyone we have direct contact with. It is possible, but I could not tell you who. Perhaps that is where you should begin your exploration of the Realm."

Yes, tonight's dreams will begin a journey in an unknown direction within an unknown world.

A vast ocean lay before him, smooth as glass. The sunset reflected perfectly on the surface to the point that it was impossible to tell where the sky ended and the ocean began. A feeling of serenity rippled across his body. This scene was so familiar, and yet something was different in this moment. As Emkayh looked around he anticipated seeing nothing but water. This time, however, there was a mass of land jutting out of the pristine oceanscape directly behind him. He squinted, attempting to make out the details of this island, but all he could see was vague masses of color seeming to be a sandy beach, a forest, and mountains. He would need to get a closer look, but how could he get there?

He started to walk towards the shore, but it didn't appear as though he was actually getting anywhere. No matter the pace, he remained stationary. He then recalled his conversation with Namine and a specific detail about the laws of the Realm of Dreams: you can travel anywhere instantaneously.

After remembering this detail, Emkayh takes a deep breath, trying to think of how this occurs. He glances at the shore once again and blinks. As he opens his eyes again, he is knocked off his feet at sight before him. The sand breaks his fall and he looks around in amazement. Could it really have been that easy?

As he surveys the island, he sees many new sights. Flora and fauna that appear to shimmer with the reflection of the glorious colors of the sky line the edge of the forest. A stream which appears to be traveling downhill, but also uphill at the same time. The sand below his feet feels as though it is in constant motion, though he doesn't sink into the beach in any way.

The quiet serenity is disrupted by a soft chiming noise. He looks towards the noise and sees some plants moving at the edge of the woods. Was someone else here? Emkayh instinctively attempts to walk toward the curious scene, but immediately sinks into the sand. Every move he makes brings him further into the ground. Doing his best to remain calm, he looks off in the direction of the rustling foliage and blinks.

As his eyes open, he finds himself standing deep in the woods. Knowing he has a way to travel quickly and escape any possible dangers, he decides to take a step on this new surface. Luckily this land seems more stable. He continues off in a direction which just seems to feel right, even though he doesn't even have any sight of the beach or the mountain to help him get his bearings.

He continues on for what feels like hours and finally begins to see a light through the trees in front of him. The light appears to have a reddish hue, though it does not appear to be the same shade as the sunset he first saw in the Realm. As he approaches the edge of the woods, the light becomes blinding. His eyes adjust to the light and eventually he begins to see some shapes of the landscape around him. There appears to be a familiar looking cave on one side of him and a stream off to the other.

He decides to approach the cave, attracted by the familiar appearance. Upon entering the mouth of the cave, he sees an even more familiar sight: his clan's sigil. Could this be Caster's Cavern? Could this be his home? As he begins to go further into the cave, another chiming noise startled him. He whips his head around to find a mysterious silhouette standing near the stream.

He cannot make out any details of the figure, but it does not seem threatening in any way, quite the opposite, actually. The figure seems to bring a sense of calm and comfort, as though it was a long-lost friend. Who could this be? A familiar voice breaks the silence.

"I am almost here."

Once again Emkayh opens his eyes to the dim light of his cave. The dream still vivid in his mind, he reflects on the figure and attempts to recall who it may be. It appears to be too small to be most dragons he knows, but too large to be any of the Faes, either. Their voice hangs in the air around him, almost as though he actually heard the words in this world.

Knowing the message this time implied their imminent arrival, Emkayh decides to leave the cave and explore the perimeter. He searched around the Wood looking for any hints of their presence. There were familiars aplenty, as well as several dragons from other nearby clans. None of them seemed to match the sensation of the being from the Realm.

Time passed and shadows grew longer indicating the passing of several hours, beginning about the most luminous time of day in the Tangled Woods: twilight. While across the rest of Sornieth twilight brings about a beginning of darkness, twilight in the Tangled Wood is the brightest part of the day. The sunlight pierces through a portion of the canopy above creating an intricate tapestry of color above. Though it still is dark in relation to the brightness of the glowshrooms and other flora and fauna, this tapestry reminds Emkayh of the colorful, glowing veins in the walls of Caster's Cavern.

Knowing the day is nearing an end, he decides to make his way back to the Cavern to speak with Namine once more. He flies between the trees with ease, even though many find them to be an intricate maze. As he arrives back at the Cavern, he takes a look back towards the creek on the other end of the clearing. Nothing. No one. He remains alone in this space.

He enters the mouth of the cave as he has done countless times before, but somehow it feels different this time. It almost feels as though his scales are standing on end. He pauses abruptly at the muffled sound of rustling leaves, a new sense of alertness crackling through him. He turns around and cautiously peers at the edge of the clearing. Suddenly he spies where the noise is coming from. A small figure can be seen crouched down at the edge of a stream. As he approaches, the figure seemingly vanishes, but their shadow eerily remains. Emkayh approaches the remnants of what once was a comforting and familiar specter.

He reaches the edge of the water nearest to the cave and glances once more at the faint shadow left behind across the stream. The most peculiar part of this mass is that rather than seeming to be an area of shade caused by an object blocking the light, this shadow seemed to be emanating shadows itself. As he stares and observes it, the dark blob seems to begin swirling with movement. The once shapeless mass begins to take on a more recognizable shape. The swirling continues as the mass separates into multiple letters forming a word: DREAM.

As Emkayh opens his eyes and adjusts to the lighting, he soon realizes that he isn't in the same place as before. While he still seemed to be floating above a body of water, this one seemed to be more of a pond than an ocean. At the edge of the water there seemed to have some sort of path that encircled the pond and many trees blooming with vibrant, fragrant flowers. While most of this Garden encircling him seems to be void of any landmarks, there is one spot that appears to hide a cluster of buildings which just barely are peeking over the treetops.

He heads toward the buildings in hopes of finding more answers. As he moves closer, he catches a glimpse of a shadowy figure, not unlike the one from outside the cave. He decides that he will follow it to track it down and discover its identity once and for all. As he makes his way through the grove, the trees let loose a flurry of petals along with a sweet smell of fruit. While at first it was rather serene and easy to ignore, it gradually became thicker and heavier with the movement seeming to take over the space around him. He stops in his tracks as they completely engulf him, swirling faster and faster.

In an instant, the petals seem to burst outward, disappearing to reveal a beautiful water garden between a cluster of pagodas. A variety of paths seem to traverse the pools, some a solid walkway, while others seem to be made up of several large stones. As he makes his way around the paths, admiring the beauty around him, he fails to notice a set of eyes watching from a distance. He continues to enjoy his surroundings, nearly forgetting his purpose here or even that this was a dream, when his eyes settle on a small bench with a floral covering above it. Upon the bench sat two figures. While one of them goes unnoticed, the other feels all too familiar and welcoming.

"Emkayh! You're here!" cries the figure as it leaps out of its seat and approaches him.

Emkayh leaps out of his bed overflowing with excitement only for it to all come crashing down as he realizes he is no longer in The Realm. He slumps back onto his bed, attempting to retain as much information from this experience as he can. The figure was so vivid this time and he was so certain of who they were, yet he felt some disconnect when trying to picture their face and features. How can something so vivid be such a featureless void?

Perhaps he could find some answers at the Forum of the Obscured Crescent. The pool there does have some resemblance to this mystery figure from his trips to The Realm. Maybe he could discover some hints as to what he is experiencing.

Upon arrival at the Forum, he takes his usual seat and observes his surroundings. Dragons of all sizes and breeds fly and walk in an out of the Forum, though all respectfully use the archways at the tops of the seating area rather than just flying in from above. He turns his gaze to the pool at the center of the Forum. While at first glance it looks like dark water, the substance actually seems to have the appearance of a gas, as well, though it truly is neither. The pool comes from Shadowbinder herself, filled with the very shadows that drip forth from her being. The shadows that fill the pool can have some very positive effects, but also can be very harmful; it all depends on what the intentions of the user.

**years later they meet again in the dream realm. Emkayh is unsure of how to react, though filled with excitement. The friend is acting distant and quiet as they go about their business. The house is very unfamiliar and yet seems like a place he’s been before. Another being is there, too, though they don’t interact with Emkayh. The awkward tension in the air is almost palpable, yet it can’t calm the powerful emotions in Emkayh’s mind and heart.
