Biography

~Nil~
Maintainer of the fabric of reality
independent - inquisitive - lonely

"Occasionally, something can go wrong. Sometimes in your travels, you will slip out of what is and enter the place of what should not be. Limbo is a dreary space of cast off worlds and broken realities. There is no light in Limbo. There is little hope in limbo. Should you ever escape limbo, you will usually be far, far from home."

This dragon's egg did not hatch in a warm nest by her loving mother's side. It was stolen, as eggs often are, by a malicious Beastclan. However, the egg fell from the creature's grasp and rolled away into an obscure crack in the land. Strange things happen in the Starfall Isles; the land is warped by the pure magic running through its veins, but the phenomenon occurring in this hidden rivet in the earth was much more sinister. Here, not only were the laws of physics broken, but the fabric of reality was warped as well. Chunks of landmass seemed to fall away into nothingness. The air twisted and turned, creating a portal of sorts, in which one could see the world of another dimension if one looked long enough.

The egg passed through this portal.

And of course, something went wrong along the way.

The egg wiggled and cracked. Bits of shell fell away and a little female Ridgeback emerged, but she had not passed through unscathed. Her body was speckled and shaded in an intense black, and her wings emitted a strange swirling pattern. Her scales had become a reflection of the world around her.

She had been born in a world of no day or night. No color. No light. The landmasses were speckled like her, but their positions would boggle the minds of geologists and cartographers alike as they defy logical perception. The space far above contained not sky, but a solid ink-colored mass akin to a ceiling that thwarted escape by upward travel, but the other directions seemed to stretch on infinitely. Large, dark, and hovering monolithic entities made up the dimension's population, and by now a few had gathered around the hatchling. Each one had a single closed crimson eye that gradually stretched open as they approached. The little dragon started to whimper in fear and she scurried away from the beasts. Desperate to be free of this terrifying world, she frantically scrambled up and over the speckled platforms while avoiding the monoliths at every turn, but she couldn't find a place where their curious eyes didn't probe. No matter where she looked, the same desolate, dreary landscape sprawled for miles without end. With her energy beginning to drain, she climbed to the peak of a large formation in a final effort to discover some sort of exit. Instead, her body was struck stiff by the sight she witnessed from her perch. A sinister crimson glare burned into her from the murky darkness; far above, a massive eye bore down on her. A heavy sinking feeling grasped her heart as the undeniable truth dawned on her:

She was here to stay.

Time passed, if you could say time existed in this realm. The Ridgeback grew both in size and in mind. Hunger would creep up on her over and over, but each time she was driven to unconsciousness, she would wake up feeling strong and renewed until neither hunger nor exhaustion ailed her. She became accustomed to her dreary surroundings and was no longer afraid of the realm's creatures. She came to understand a single word in the unyielding perpetual limbo: "Nil", and she took it as her name.

Taking a handful of dirt from beneath her, she marveled at its uncanny properties. It seemed to not be dirt at all; it would dissipate and fade out of existence some time after she picked it up and reappear in its original location. However, its most interesting property seemed a bit eerie in nature. Sometimes objects, such as trinkets and toys, would appear from Sorneith. Nil had witnessed this mysterious property on multiple occasions. The object in question would degrade, not so much as disintegrate or decompose, but gradually revert into its original components and compounds before finally becoming the same speckled dirt that surrounded it.

The mechanics of this world were everything she knew. The longer she existed in this broken realm, the more she became in tune with it, and eventually she gained the ability to manipulate its forces to her will. Despite her strengthening synergy, she had not discovered everything this world had to offer. Little did she know, there was a way back to Sorneith.

Flying over the landmasses in search of something to occupy her mind, perhaps another trinket to watch degrade or a monolith to toy with, she spotted something out of the corner of her eye: a blot of color. Far below her, a faint shade of brownish-red stood out in the sea of gray. Curiosity taking hold, she dropped down to investigate. A strange substance pooled in the basin of a shallow pit. She could not resist the temptation to stick her hand into it, eager to learn this new substance's properties. In a flash of light she was sucked into the pool and she vanished from the realm.

Her eyes opened, but quickly snapped back shut. They were bombarded by a vast number of brilliant colors, and sounds she had never heard before filled her ears.

Nil, how are you adjusting to this new place with colour and sounds?

"Ah, a good question my friend."
A voice whispers from somewhere, but you aren't sure where.
"Adjusting to my place of origin was quite a challenge after spending so much time in that world."
The outline of a female Ridgeback materialized in front of you, but she didn't seem to be all there.
"My apologies for the form you see before you. I do not fully manifest here. If you would like to see my true form, we must take a little trip. Do not be worried, you will not come to harm in my world."
With a gentle swipe of her claw, a blue portal opens, and you both pass through.

"Welcome to my home and birthplace. It's not much to look at, but it's where I belong."
Several monoliths approach in curiosity, but Nil shoos them away.

"You wanted to know about my life in Sorneith after leaving here, yes? Well, when I first opened my eyes that day, I was shocked, and my eyes began to hurt. I had never even imagined so much color could exist! But my curiosity soon got the better of me and I took off into an exploration of my new surroundings. I was there in my full form then as well, but that would cause problems later. I made my way through jungle and over plains and water, and somehow I was eventually discovered by the clan that was meant to be my home. That I was ever meant to be a part of that world was news to me, but my parents were so happy that I was there, and I began to accept it. The members of my clan gave me everything I needed to understand the world of Sorneith. They taught me, and gave me love and compassion, but like I said... there was a problem. Because I had become a part this world, here in the darkness, distortion began appearing around me on Sorneith. The distortion would break the world near me, causing the earth to break apart, crumble and suspend in the air, and the laws of physics would fail. At first, my clanmates advised me to not worry about it, as these were common occurrences in the Starfall Isles, but the distortion worsened with each passing day. Finally, a clanmate got hurt, and I knew I couldn't stay any longer. I fled the clan, and Sorneith. I found my way back here, and here I stayed for a long time. I already missed my clan, my family, everything they taught me, and everything I could have been a part of, but I would not cause them anymore harm. I have since learned to control what I am on a much deeper level and discovered my purpose in this world, but I can still only visit Sorneith in that partial state you saw earlier. I can visit my clan, but even then, I cannot stay long. Maybe someday... I'll be able to stay for a long time, and live as a clan member for a while, but for now, here I must stay and watch over both worlds. The Isles may be unstable land, but I'll protect Sorneith from falling apart altogether, should such an event ever come to threaten its stability."

She stares off into the murky distance for a few moments, and turns back to you.
"It is time for you to go. Thank you for listening to my story."
She opens a portal the same way as before, but this time, only you pass through, and you find yourself back where the conversation had begun.
