I'm a Lover and a Fighter, I'm not your Friend


Though Karth has its own standing army - the secret behind its lasting power - the deep coffers of the wealthy trade city attract a variety of hired swords to its walls. The Baroness employs many such bands of mercenaries, mostly to send outside the city walls on missions where it would be tactless to risk the lives of her own people.

Leader of a mercenary band that call themselves the Sunbound Banner, Syke is the most charismatic of the mercenary leaders. He is arrogant beyond belief, but also charming and dashing in his own uncouth manner. He claims himself a descendant of the noble Sunchaser, though the Baroness questions the validity of this lineage. Lately she has found herself growing fond of his swashbuckling bravado. Long hours she's kept in his company, discussing everything from politics to passtimes, pacing the marble courtyards and the gardens surrounding the Starset Mirror, the perfectly circular pond of silvered water at the center of the Baroness's palace, which reflects the heavens in perfect replica. In a way, he is more loyal to her than most of the dragons in her employment.

Within the venomous atmosphere of the Boneyard Throneroom, lineage means little these days; the old bloodlines are mostly spent and spilled, and anyone daring enough can make a name for themselves here. Syke came from nothing, and now that he's been presented with an opportunity to rise above his humble beginnings, he doesn't care whose bodies he'll step on to reach the top. Amongst the cutthroats and the thieves he feels right at home, so the venomous atmosphere of the Courtroom suites him just fine. His habit of speaking his mind without heeding the political climate earns him both friends and enemies; currently his biggest rivals are amongst the other hopeful suitors that vie for the Baroness's attention, chief of these the Count Palatine, one of the few noble-by-blood remaining.
