_____________
Birthed from crystal brimming with electricity, limbs powered by steam, and veins of liquid crystal, the heavy body lifted itself off the ground. Smooth, fluid, with no hesitation or stutter it opened its cold obsidian eyes. It was a thing of beauty, sleek metal entwined in glimmering prismatic stone. It waited; gold horn-shaped antennae ready to listen for an order. It didn’t have a mind of its own, not yet. It was a mindless construct, its decisions made by following complex programming inscribed into its body.

It wasn’t a sanctioned experiment. The materials were gathered over the course of years. Dellin, a humble and little of note engineer would sequester small amounts of crystal and scrap metal from other experiments as part of the ‘clean up’ routine. Dientro took to investigating the research of other projects; she pored over the notes left lying about by engineers and geologists. Shorted the energy running to the psychology ward so that she could slip into the top-secret documents of the A.I. project while she went about fixing the system.

They started small, crafty tiny creatures that moved like children’s toys. They were simple; a hunk of crystal with a metal plate armor body, steam-powered to make simple, small movements like scuttling forward, turning, and hopping. The circuitry was the most testy. It was only a whim, an idea of Dientro’s when she saw the state change of objects put under high pressure.

She had enlisted Dellin’s help, the knowledge of some of his prior thievery held against him. She needed a safe way to apply large amounts of pressure without it being known. She couldn’t use the proper machinery as it was guarded, everything was except for a few forgotten storage rooms in an old wing of the underground complex. Dellin built the machine, and Dientro conducted a multitude of tests until she was finally able to pressurize a prismatic crystal into liquid phase. It was perfect for her needs, the piezoelectric crystal capable of conducting electrical currents; a kind of flexible circuitry that could control the limbs of a construct like muscles.

They created many strange constructs, but none seemed to be quite what she wanted. The Dustcarve dig was their breakthrough. The discovery of obelisks, born from rock was what her research needed. The labs had quickly acquired their own specimen, a young hatchling that they took great care to mold to their liking. Too well, perhaps, as it never breathed a word of her own studies on it. With the perfect model available to her, she was able to model a strong body and create veins of liquid crystal circuits.

It was a thing of beauty, everything she had dreamed of. It was powerful and followed her orders like the fine-tuned machine it was. It was inevitable, however, that she was unable to maintain secrecy over its existence. It was soon discovered by other researchers and brought to the attention of the CEO of Wispwillow Labs, Mjehurići. She wasn’t in the trouble she thought she would be in, however, not like she had feared. Instead, she was lauded by the CEO. He boasted about how incredible her creation was and asked her to be the head of a new project – the continued development of Ahnsol and the research of true Artificial Intelligence.

Where before the A.I. team was stuck working with basic experiments, they now had the perfect body to host their research. Even Dellin, the lowly engineer was given the promotion to Chief Engineer of the Ahnsol project with a hefty raise that had him immediately accepting the offer. Ahnsol, incapable of true thought became the subject of much experimentation and many repairs. During off time, it was assigned guard duty which it took to with incredible success. With Ahnsol as the basis, a new project arose looking into constructed soldiers; mindless and repairable.
