Tactician • Spy • Informant
Of all the hatchlings, the youngest is the one Belinda protects the most often, shielding her from any and all possible buyers. No, she's not the nicest of colours, but she's the most likeable of the lot, adorable and cute without trying hard like her older sister - and for many dragons checking out the auction block, that factor adds some real value. But it adds value in her parent's eyes too, and so Belinda tends to be even more protective of her than she is of the rest, which is certainly saying something. Earlier in the day, an admirer gave her a chess set to play with for some obscure reason, all carved ivory and polished ebony, and since then she has been fascinated by it, toying with each little bishop and pawn, marveling at the intricate grooves she can feel on each piece. When not snapping and snarling at passing dragons, her mother sits with her nestled between her front legs, and tries to show her how to play. It's not easy, given that Belinda's claws are ill-suited to dexterous tasks, but she manages somehow. The Pearlcatcher seems to have taken a liking to the game, since even when her mother isn't there to supervise, she sits in front of it, moving first one piece, then another. She is apparently entranced by it, but remains good-natured even when the set is removed and she is left to sit. There's a bit of mewling, but she soon pads back to her mother, playing with her pearl in safety, nibbling and licking and scratching at it. She doesn't mind that someone's taken away what she was obsessing over not two minutes ago; a quality that makes her all the more desirable in the eyes of the watching dragons, and causes her mother to redouble her efforts to keep at least this hatchling for herself. What no one realizes, however, is that the Pearlcatcher's still obsessing over that chess set, already plotting how she will get it back. She's got a strategic mind hidden behind a dopey, cheerful personality; her pearl is covered not with scratches, but tiny diagrams and snatches of code. She knows how to get attention without trying too hard like her sister, and it's working; she's admired from afar by dragons thinking that she's going to be a perfect new addition to their clan. And she's going to be perfect, certainly - the perfect little monster, that is. |
