Biography
Glasir
Glasir sat among the trees - immobile, starving, watching - until he was delirious with exhaustion and desperation because all he wanted was to know. He stood on creaky limbs and sobbed. He stood like that for days until he could cry no longer, and when that happened he stood until his legs would no longer support him, and then finally, as he crumpled to the leaf littered ground, he heard a voice.
He opened his eyes, unable to do anything else, and listened.
Glasir closed his eyes and waited. The sun was warm on his skin, and in his mind he allowed himself to imagine that it was seeping through the weak outer layers of his being and nourishing his weakened body. The vision gave him strength, and he breathed deeply.
Glasir almost expected a sudden change, a flash of inspiration, something. But nothing happened. He laid there, and he laid there, and he laid there. He felt the sun and the wind, and he breathed but was otherwise still. Occasionally, little creatures would scamper over him. When it rained, he sank into the mud that formed beneath him - a little deeper each time. His thoughts wandered until he no longer knew what it was he was waiting for. Who was he? What was he?
Eventually, Glasir forgot themself and was aware only of their surroundings. Their limbs were roots and their ears were filled with the whispers of the trees.
Many, many years later, after much contemplation, Glasir rose. Their skin was rough and dark, their hair full of leaves, and when they stood a single seed dropped into the indent of their resting place. They wandered the forest alone for many years more, before meeting someone - a kindred spirit. She too loved the trees, though she was not as consumed by her search as they had been. She walked more easily, and spoke to trees and animals alike. The two of them traveled together, tending to the little green growing things of the forest and planting seeds of their own. They filled the land with their children. Some, following in their parents' footsteps, learned the languages of Nature as well. Others went to serve beneath the Gladekeeper, their devotion to her unable to be contained by even the most expansive reaches of the trees.

They did not realize, back then when it all began, that you could so thoroughly lose yourself by discovering who you were. Glasir, even when they had been a young man who was clever and insightful, could not have possessed the foresight to see what would come of their devotion. Glasir served the Gladekeeper tirelessly, day and night. He learned all of Nature's ways; he hunted with beasts both ferocious and sly and he swam with the sleek creatures of the water and sometimes he slept the winters away, curled around a hoard of gathered food. He loved the animals, but felt drawn inexplicably to the trees. They were not so easy to understand. They spoke in whispers and groans and rustles. They had no eyes but had witnessed countless years of change and growth and destruction. They were tall and mighty, and when they fell they fell hard, but they also gave birth to the most delicate flowers and fragrant fruits. Yes, it was the trees that Glasir most longed to understand. |

He stood like that for days until he could cry no longer, and when that happened he stood until his legs would no longer support him, and then finally, as he crumpled to the leaf littered ground, he heard a voice.
"It has been many years since we have spoken to one of your kind."
He opened his eyes, unable to do anything else, and listened.
"Feel the sun on your skin, youngling. Let it revive you. Feel the wind. It will help you speak."
Glasir closed his eyes and waited. The sun was warm on his skin, and in his mind he allowed himself to imagine that it was seeping through the weak outer layers of his being and nourishing his weakened body. The vision gave him strength, and he breathed deeply.
"Very good. You wished to understand. We will grant you this favor."
