Zal and his counterpart Mox are two trickster dragons who make their home in the redwood forests found in light flight's territory. Zal is dressed in strange, garish clothing and tows around a gustborne balloon with him. Wildlife seems to flock to him, but in particular he has made friends with a screaming tickbird and a velvet floracat, who both follow him around devotedly and stare down any other passersby.

Those who have met Zal in the woods claim that he is followed by the sound of music, and the first and last impression they get of him are his piercing red eyes. He is known to offer help to those who are truly lost and pure of heart, and rumored to lead astray those who have malicious intent. Despite his rather mythical status, there are quite a few Radiant Star dragons who appear to know how to find him and have even made friends with him.
