An ice-cold shiver ran down her spine as the distant dark clouds filled with lightning could be seen over the dry dunes that marked the borders of the Shifting Expanse. Slowly making their closer to where she was.
Kyoko had just opened her eyes for the first time, the shells of her egg still around her. Not knowing what had happened to her, she tried to crawl back in the warm surroundings of the shell that had served her as protection for months. It was broken and too small, and not much of a shelter anymore. Carefully she placed her snout against the broken pieces in all hopes to repair it, but it was no use.

Gusts of wind were starting to get stronger and the dark clouds filled with rain covered the sky. The first drops of water came down and the sand on the ground turned into mud.
When the first drops of water fell on Kyoko, a slight panic came over her as she had no idea what was happening. This strange and unknown world was big and a complete mystery to her.
While she was still very wobbly on her paws, she tried to make her way towards something that could protect her. Yet there was nothing but sand and small plants to be seen.
The darkness was getting more intense and little by little, the sight of the plants and the sand were only seen when the lightning flashed above her.

Cold and alone, Kyoko had curled up into a small ball, trying to protect herself from the rain that was getting worse and worse. Her tail was wrapped around her body while she covered her face under her wings to protect herself from the water that was pouring down. The small dragon shivered and shook while there seemed to be no end to this storm. Kyoko became more miserable and cold, feeling so alone in this new world, but she didn’t dare to move.
It was only when lightning struck a cactus nearby and made the ground shake under her claws that the fear inside of her reached her limits. She jumped up from her curled up position, looked up in the sky and cried for help. A shrieking cry that would go through flesh and bone. A cry that carried along with the wind. Yet no help came.

It took hours before the storm finally had taken back in force. The rain finally stopped coming down, the wind subsided and the lightning disappeared in the distance. A soaking wet Kyoko, still scared and cold to the bone finally looked up, shaking.
Daylight had returned, showing some grey and depressing clouds above her. The water that pooled around her were leftovers from the storm. The cactus that was hit by the lightning was split in two and along with the small patches of grass around it, was as black as soot.
Carefully Kyoko started to get up. Her limbs were completely stiff from the cold and once again, she just wished to be back in the safe and warm shelter of her egg.

Suddenly, she saw movement… just in front of her in a patch of grass. Kyoko’s eyes were fixed on it, her fear rising, with no idea of what it could be. She was frozen on the spot, completely fixed on the patch of grass that, as for now, didn’t move anymore.
And then again, It moved. It made a sound before the tiniest little thing jumped out. Kyoko, who had never seen anything like it before, jumped backwards, tripped over her tail and fell to the ground. She covered her eyes with her wings, trying to protect herself from this ‘monster’.
“Oh come on! You don’t dare to tell me you are afraid of a mouse? You were the one crying for help right? Was this the problem? Oh, come on… You catch it, you eat it. Like normal dragons do,” a cocky voice said not very far away from her.
Kyoko, scared, lifted one of her wings to check up on what was going on before she could see another dragon right in front of her who seemed to be rolling his eyes. The dragon was bigger than her, mostly blue with beige wings.
“W..What?” She answered swallowing for a moment, still scared due to all that had happened. Yet she completely lifted her wings and tried to sit straight up again so she could look at this new dragon in front of her. “What is a mouse?”
The blue dragon looked down at her, he sighed deeply as if he was very annoyed at this before he spread his wings and jumped in the air and took off.
“Hey! Please, don’t go!” Kyoko yelled, scared to be left alone again in this big and strange place. What had she done to chase him away? Why would he go? Yet the blue dragon was high up in the air, not even looking back at her as he flew away from her spot.

With no knowledge of how to use her wings, although now getting the theory behind what they should be used for, Kyoko tried to run after the blue dragon that was up in the air. Her eyes were fixed on him and she saw how the dragon rushed down towards the ground and flew back up again in seconds. He made a turn and started to fly back towards her.

Suddenly something dropped on the ground right in front of her, just before the dragon landed not too far from her spot. “That is a mouse. Get it? It should be eaten.” He said with little patience towards the small baby dragon. “How did you survive in this world without even knowing that?” He asked raising an eyebrow.
One look at the mouse on the ground, Kyoko recognised the creature that had jumped out of the patch of grass. This was a mouse? And it could be eaten? Would eating something do anything about the weird feeling she had in her stomach?
“Come on, eat it before you starve to death,” the impatient dragon said. “Or want me to leave you here, as I do not have all day.”
“No, please don’t leave,” Kyoko begged him before she looked at the mouse that was in front of her and took it between her teeth, finding the taste rather pleasing to her surprise and eagerly swallowed it.
After the mouse was gone she looked back up to the blue dragon. “Who are you?” She then curiously asked, wanting to know who this stranger in front of her was.
It was a question that made the blue dragon smirk after she had asked it. A smirk that Kyoko mistook as a gentle smile. “My name is Akihiro,” He said highly as he stepped closer to her. “Now, are you ready to leave or do you want to wait for the next dragon to come to this deserted spot before you die?” He asked her. Without waiting for an answer he turned around to leave, leaving her right there if she did not make up her mind quickly.
“I can’t fly,” she quickly said before she followed him in a hurry, not wanting to be left alone. Akihiro didn’t answer her, nor did he spread his wings to fly off. He just walked in front of her, on a pace she could keep up with.

Although Akihiro had just been a few weeks older than Kyoko, his start in life had been a little bit easier than hers. A travelling dragon had taken him under his wing until he was able to take care of himself and stand on his own four feet. All that he had known, he passed down to Kyoko so they could take care of each other.

The two of them had been travelling together for the longest time, travelling the world and enjoying each others company, growing closer and closer to each other until they had settled down in the Highland Scrub of the Shifting Expanse. It was mostly Kyoko who felt the need to settle down somewhere, as unlike her start in life, she wanted to raise some hatchlings of her own, in a loving and safe place that she could call her home. A home that would soon be filled by the sound of cries from newborns as two eggs were guarded and watched by the protective eye from Kyoko.

Kyoko stayed near the den to watch their eggs while Akihiro went out to search for food. While he was gone, she would just curl up around her precious eggs to make sure that none of them would get stolen, roll off on their own or just… disappear. So none of her children would be alone when they got out of their eggs as she had been. That wouldn’t happen to her hatchlings. They would be safe.

Sometimes Kyoko was alone for days. She knew that Akihiro had some trouble with settling down. She knew that the thing he loved, was to see the world and explore it all. Yet she knew that he would always return. She knew that the love she felt for him was returned. And she was right. Akihiro always returned, with food, treasure and a lot of other things.

It was only on one occasion when he’d stayed out longer than two weeks, that Kyoko had started to worry. Even if he stayed out for days after days… It never took him this long to return home! Her eyes had moved over to her eggs, wondering if she was able to leave them alone to look for him. She had left them before to search for food when Akihiro wasn’t around but… She never strayed far from the nest. Would it be okay to leave them? But where would she look? There were a lot of questions going on through her mind and there were no answers that came to her.

Just as she had gotten up to leave the lair, to spread her wings and take off to find him, she saw him. He was in the air and flew back to the lair. She could see that he had difficulties. What had happened to him? Worry had taken over her as she saw the blood in Akihiro’s face and on his side after he landed. Yet he didn’t speak to her as he crawled in their lair and lay down to the ground.
“Ak, let me help you,” she softly said as she had followed him inside the lair. He needed help! That was obvious but he wasn’t letting her anywhere close.
“I don’t need help Kyoko. I’ll be fine. Check the bag, that needs help,” he annoyingly said trying to get her away from him. Trying to act tough, as if nothing had happened. Besides… There was something more important in the bag that he had carried along than him and he knew that Kyoko knew what to do with it.
“That? What are you talking about?” She tried to ask but she knew how stubborn her mate could be. So she turned to the bag and opened it with her paw. There wasn’t any food in there, actually, it seemed to be empty, which was very unlike Akihiro.

Then her eyes fell on a very small movement on the bottom… “You took a Fae!” She exclaimed, her voice suddenly full of concern as she took the Fae hatchling out of the bag. The little hatchling was very small, way smaller than she could have imagined and she could just hold it in one of her claws. She carefully carried it to her nest and placed it close to her eggs and curled around the little one to keep her warm.

Akihiro had managed to get up and had gotten closer to her and curled around her. “It was abandoned and alone. I found her in the Windswept Plateau while looking for food. Kyoko, it was on the edge of dying. I knew you would have taken her if you found her because that is who you are. I couldn’t leave her,”
Akihiro didn’t need to say more for Kyoko to accept this girl in her care. Akihiro had known her too well, she wouldn’t have left her. She showed some affection to Akihiro as a thank you before her eyes were on the very small hatchling that had curled up close to her, very weak but safe at last.

“She didn’t speak when I found her. Unlike you,” Akihiro softly said, trying not to wake the tiny Fae. “So what will you name her?” He asked as he placed his head on Kyoko’s paws so he could also watch the little Fae.
Kyoko, who had just felt like her name was part of her from within, had never thought of naming another dragon. She had to think about it for a moment before she decided; “Her name will be Miyoko,” she said and smiled proudly. “Because it means beautiful. To me she is the most beautiful little girl in the world,” She said and she could even spot a smile on Akihiro’s usual grumpy face, knowing he was more than fine with it.

As time flew by, Kyoko watched Miyoko grew older. She played with the two boys from Akihiro and Kyoko, collecting small items that she enjoyed looking at, making up stories that filled the lair with laughter. Yet something was missing, something that nagged on Kyoko’s conscience. She wondered what it was for a very long time until she finally realized what it was. Before she could do anything about it, she knew she had to talk to Akihiro. The only problem was that she wasn’t sure how he was going to take it.

It was late at night, the three hatchlings were already asleep when she crawled closer to Akihiro and looked at him. Although his eyes were closed, ready to fall asleep, Kyoko knew he was still awake.
“Spit it out,” he said, knowing that she wanted to say something, opening his eyes to look at her.
She was a little taken by surprise when he spoke before her, yet she decided to tell him what was on her heart. “It’s about Miyoko,” she softly said and looked at Akihiro. “And maybe a bit about me as well.”
Akihiro sat up to listen to her. She didn’t want to pressure him into anything but she felt she had to do this.
“Well?” He asked raising an eyebrow when she remained silent for a while.
Kyoko took a deep breath before she finally spoke to him. “I want to find abandoned eggs and hatchlings and help them,” she said looking at him. “I want every hatchling to have a chance to grow up in a safe environment. I want to take care of them and give them what they need.”
It was silent for a while before Akihiro got up and stretched his legs. Kyoko looked at him confused and not sure what he was going to do. She quickly got up herself as well, following him outside of the lair and watched how he spread his wings.
“Akihiro?” She asked. “Please don’t leave. You mean the world to me, I don’t want to lose you. If you do not agree on this I understand, but please don’t leave me,” she begged him.
For a moment Akihiro frowned and turned around to face her. He folded his wings back to his body before he came closer. “You want eggs right? I wouldn’t leave you and never return. You want eggs, so I’m going to find them,” he said before he spread his wings again and flew off in the air, leaving Kyoko behind to take care of the three hatchlings, but on a mission to help more dragons for Kyoko.
A mission that would lead to the beginning of their lair, a lair that would exist from the orphaned dragons they found. Sometimes they left the lair after they had grown up, most remained and helped out with the ever-growing lair.
All of them knew that, as long as Kyoko cared, this lair would keep growing and continue to exist.
