✦in hoc signo tempestatum vinces✦

Light barely reaches this deep below the surface; but you are determined.

Here, down - down further than you've explored - lies a facility. A huge, white coliseum - pristine; lit by pure, coalesced orbs of energy, sprawling across the edges of the Leviathan trench. At the center, a tower; busy as dragons flit in, and out; the magic pouring from it makes your teeth chatter.

As you land, everything around you stops. This is Resdayn, an academy and laboratory, that many clans in Sornieth speak of; either in hushed whispers or accompanied by curses.

A regal-looking Imperial steps forth, many eyes watch him as he approaches.

✦TERMINOLOGY✦

  • "in hoc signo tempestatum vinces" - "In this sign, Conquer the Storm." - A battle cry spoken by the Praetorians and Regium of Resdayn, especially whilst conquering an enemy Clan, or whilst dispelling great magic.

  • Magnus - Plural Magni - 'Great One' or 'Noble' in common. Magni are clan members who have proven their 'worth'. Once contributing something major, they are exalted, and given a role within the class they best fit. Magni are divided into six classes; Board, Future, Catalyst, Bastion, Eye and Chronicler.

  • Board-Class - The governing body of Resdayn, the Board convenes to make decisions for the clan. They include leaders in all other classes, and the Director.

  • Future-Class - Scientists. Located in the Laboratory, they are constantly testing, striving to achieve impossible technology.

  • Catalyst-Class - Mages of the Academy, Catalyst-Class dragons are fledged students, and able to cast the strongest spells.

  • Bastion-Class - Adorned in armour, Bastion-Class ranks are guards, fighters or knights, ensuring safety for the clan.

  • Eye-Class - Hunters, spies and scouts, these dragons act as the 'unseen arm' of Resdayn, operating from the shadows.

  • Chronicler-Class - These dragons are lore-keepers, writers, augurs and wordsmiths, tasked with retaining history.

  • Solum - Plural Solumni - Short for 'Solumnus', which means 'Lonely One' or 'Peasant' in common. Solumni make up the lower ranks; anything which the Director believes isn't 'worth' showing off to Sornieth - these include most back-breaking tasks, manual labour and industry. Magni who are retired, or unable to work, are returned to this rank as 'Solumnus Veteris' - meaning 'Old Lonely One' or 'Veteran'. Unlike other ranks, Solumni are not divided into classes.

    ✦RANKS✦

    Caesar
    'Director' in common.
    Board-Class role.

The leader of Resdayn, the role of 'Director' is inherited, with the previous Director selecting their successor from the Board. They have the final say, but must consult the rest of the Board in order to finalize decisions - despite this, the Director is not bound by any rules suggesting they actually have to take the Board's advice. Directors can preside over all classes, but are the only Board-class who has control of Chroniclers.

    Auxiliary
    'Herald' in common.
    Board-Class role.

Heralds preside over Future-class roles, being prominent healers or scientists. With unconditional access to the Laboratories, Heralds can begin, or halt, any tests they so choose. Alongside the Future-class, Heralds also meddle with Solumni.

    Adjutant
    'Harbinger' in common.
    Board-Class role.

Harbingers act as leaders for Catalyst-class roles. They are Magni who have proven themselves superior to all others in their class, typically by discovering new, powerful magicks. All Harbingers are required to have an all-encompassing knowledge of their own element, and, in addition, another element entirely, and operate mostly from within the Academy.

    Potentate
    'Legate' in common.
    Board-Class role.

Second only to the Director, Legates act as a 'deputy'. Their main role is to provide advice - mostly military - however, they also act as personal guard. Legates orchestrate Bastion-class roles, and can overrule any decisions made by the Centurion. They are primarily located in the Sunken Coliseum.

    Luscinia
    'Nightingale' in common.
    Board-Class role.

Nightingales act as leaders for Eye-class roles. Spymasters by trade, Nightingales often operate outside of common law - making the difficult decisions that the public do not need to see. They work closely with Luminaries to orchestrate diplomatic relations. Although it isn't all subterfuge - Nightingales coordinate hunters, too.

    RESDAYN_BANNER_LRG.png
    Curans
    'Doctor' in common.
    Future-Class role.

The loose term of 'doctor' is applied to the Curans, although more specifically a doctor of medicine, they can be of any kind, but still must perform the same duty. Reporting directly to the Herald, their duty is to keep the clan alive; studying their injuries or ailments and then passing them over to the appropriate subsidiary - typically the Chemist or Healer.

    Capsarior
    'Biologist' in common.
    Future-Class role.

Chief researchers for the Medical Division, Biologists are typically 'head' of the Future-class roles. Operating out of the Laboratory, their life is dedicated to testing, mostly genetically. They work alongside the Chemist and Physicist. Nature magic tends to be studied, as it is a competent tool to study anything living - but a few select Plague, for its fortitude and tenacity.

    Quaesitor
    'Chemist' in common.
    Future-Class role.

Analyzing samples, synthesizing chemicals, crampagulating biomed gel - Chemists do it all. Working alongside the Biologist and Physicist, the three coalesce their work within the Laboratory. Acting also as a pharmacist, Chemists create solutions to the various ailments within Resdayn. Plague magic tends to be favoured in this role, due to its extensive array of acids and poisons.

    Chirurgus
    'Physicist' in common.
    Future-Class role.

Although the term 'maniac' may better describe a Physicist, those in this role study the intricacies of Sornieth. Many have an in-depth understanding of Arcane magic, which typically encompasses graviturgy, chronurgy and astronomy.

    Benefaris
    'Healer' in common.
    Future-Class role.

Working alongside Doctors and Chemists, Healers employ various methods to keep the clan healthy. From their use of Nature or Water magic, to literal surgery, every Healer must be efficient, clean and highly intelligent. They often employ a 'shadow' from Solumni, to tutor and ease their burden of managing sick dragons alone.

    RESDAYN_BANNER_HORIZ.png

    Veneficus
    'Sorcerer' in common.
    Catalyst-Class role.

Pulling at the threads of the world, Sorcerers are the most powerful mages among the Catalyst-class. They are the primary educator, teaching all other dragons the means to learn a whole other element. Magic is like breathing to a Sorcerer - innate, simple, and holding surprising power. Often, Sorcerers will be proficient in Arcane, Shadow and Lightning.

    Magus
    'Wizard' in common.
    Catalyst-Class role.

Wizards are mages who have an extensive knowledge of their element, and another, through education. Prestigious students, Wizards are appointed by Sorcerers as their heir and assistant. They typically inherit the knowledge of a Sorcerer, but also study their own element - usually Plague or Ice

    Pythonissam
    'Witch' in common.
    Catalyst-Class role.

Using the natural world as a canvas for their work, Witches, rather than creating, adapt and grow upon a preexisting foundation. Typically versed in Nature, Earth and Wind magic, Witches have a boundless knowledge of Spirit magic - using the mysteries of Sornieth to their own, and everyone else's, gain.

    Factorum
    'Machinist' in common.
    Catalyst-Class role.

Machinists give life to the synthetic, imbuing Light and Fire into the inanimate. Technomancy, metallurgy and robotics are their primary skills - working closely with the Future-class roles, Machinists are the fine line between magic and science.

    Somniari
    'Seer' in common.
    Catalyst-Class role.

Water mages using divination and oracle magic, Seers peer into the depths, and decipher them. Many additionally seek spirit magic from Nature, working closely with Witches and Sorcerers to predict the future. Under the Water division, dream magic and prediction are almost always studied closely by Seers.

    RESDAYN_BANNER_LRG.png

    Centurion
    'Sentinel' in common.
    Bastion-Class role.

Adorned in intricate and unique armor, Sentinels conceal their faces. Versed in Wind magic, Sentinels have the ability to dispel magic, and often accompany the Catalyst-class whilst they cast their strongest spells, just in case. Sentinels preside over guards, mostly in the Sunken Coliseum and Academy.

    Templar
    'Officer' in common.
    Bastion-Class role.

Second to the Sentinel, Officers often command a small platoon of guards - particularly governing over the Undercity. They, too, know how to dispel, using ice magic to 'freeze' breath, rather than dispel truly, and are permitted to accompany Mages.

    Opilio
    'Beastmaster' in common.
    Bastion-Class role.

Presiding over the bestiary in the Sunken Coliseum, Beastmasters assign familiars to each dragon, wrangling them and keeping them in line. A Beastmaster also convenes with the Beastclans, ensuring Resdayn's alliance with the Maren remains.

    Gladiator
    'Warrior' in common.
    Bastion-Class role.

Warriors are the chiefs of the Coliseum - training Guards, Fighters and all others in the way of martial combat. Honing their skills against other dragons, Warriors ensure that they are a force to be reckoned with.

    Vexillarius
    'Guard-Captain' in common.
    Bastion-Class role.

Reporting to the Sentinel and Officer, Guard-Captains police the territory - establishing and expanding boundaries, enforcing the law, and ensuring tranquility. Unlike their superiors, Guard-Captains cannot accompany mages, and do not learn how to Dispel.

    RESDAYN_BANNER_HORIZ.png

    Praecursator
    'Scout' in common.
    Eye-Class role.

Charting the unknown, Scouts slip into obscure depths, working alongside Chronicler-class dragons in cartography. In times of war, Scouts are solely responsible for studying enemy numbers. Scouts also govern groups of explorers, and the Wayfarer.

    Tabellarius
    'Courier' in common.
    Eye-Class role.

Unlike most clans, Resdayn employs one of their own as a Courier, rather than relying on the eponymous species. Couriers fly between Resdayn, and their allies - or, occasionally, enemies - delivering messages, packages and such.

    Inquisitor
    'Wayfarer' in common.
    Eye-Class role.

Once a location has been scouted, the Wayfarer is employed to establish Resdayn's presence. They work closely with the Luminary, in order to influence the surrounding population positively. Once a trade line is established, or bountiful prey is discovered, the Wayfarer then contacts the Courier, or Hunter.

    Umbra
    'Shadow' in common.
    Eye-Class role.

Assassins, spies and double-agents, Shadows slip unseen out of Resdayn. Their sole purpose is tracking - whether it be dragon or beast, their quarry is their sole objective. Once their target is discovered, they either defer it to the Hunter, or detain or dispatch it themselves.

    Venandi
    'Hunter' in common.
    Eye-Class role.

Hunters excel in tracking prey, and know how to take them down efficiently. They are trained to use all components of their target, knowing how to tan hides and furs, craft arrows from feathers and flint, make paint from carapace and fertilizer from bone. Often, they will be away from the clan for many days, accruing a huge harvest before returning.

    RESDAYN_BANNER_LRG.png

    Mundus
    'Cartographer' in common.
    Chronicler-Class role.

Charting maps, leylines, trade routes and clan boundaries, the Cartographer works alongside the Board, and Eye-Class, to ensure Resdayn does not trespass - or is not noticed whilst trespassing.

    Arcarius
    'Scribe' in common.
    Chronicler-Class role.

Keeping charts, indexes and tables of all of the goings on in Resdayn, Scribes are additionally Treasurers - ensuring that expenses do not overtake profit, and advising the Board. They tend to work closely with Bastion-class dragons, compiling rotas.

    Augur
    'Historian' in common.
    Chronicler-Class role.

Historians ensure that Resdayn's past will not be forgotten - at least, the parts the Director wants to remember. Reporting to the Board, and the Future-class, Historians chart both past lives, and the next.

    Oculus
    'Prophet' in common.
    Chronicler-Class role.

Oculi - the plural of 'oculus' - utilise non-magical means to predict the future. Similar to the Catalyst-class Seer, the two roles will convene to share prophecies, coalescing them to derive the most truth from them.

    Orator
    'Luminary' in common.
    Chronicler-Class role.

Silver-tongued dignitaries and slimy politicians, Luminaries have unmatched charisma. They operate alongside Eye-class roles, acting as a spymaster and diplomat for Resdayn. Luminaries bring forth promotion candidates for the Director's consideration, and work closely with the board.
