"Things... worked out. Somehow."

Raised by Sunfalle’s original progenitors, Sonnel and Sarrow, Merric was left with a small fortune when they were willingly exalted to serve the Lightweaver. Though his plan was never to create a clan, Sunfalle sort of built itself entirely around him. From Kolene, a coliseum champion he hired to protect and teach him, to Gears, who stuck to him like glue and declared they were siblings, to Francis, whose thoughtful respect drove him to be more responsible, Merric went from a lonely young imperial to the unexpected leader of an unexpected clan. But of course, leadership requires more than a title, and despite his best efforts Merric found himself lacking in every department save for empathy. He struggled to organize the clan, found it difficult to motivate himself to solve each individual problem they faced, and especially hated to make decisions that divided the clan. By the time the emperor Festus attacked, Merric was only the leader in name, and did nothing to actually lead the clan itself. Perhaps that is why no one was there to protect him when one of Festus’s lieutenants crept around the thick of the battle and found Merric, alone and undefended. Perhaps that is why the clan members were so willing to follow Anamika when he claimed leadership. Perhaps that is why only a few of the clan seemed to wonder why it was Merric specifically whose vocal cords were cut, keeping him from speaking, and whose eye, leg, and wing were damaged, making him a less effective fighter. Anamika’s rule was painful for Merric to watch, and he was somewhat isolated by the newer clan members who never bothered finding ways to communicate with him. Gears, ever loyal, came up with a system of signs and magic symbols that could be used even with his injuries and his inability to speak, and it spread to those who cared enough to learn it. With it he was able to tell them what had been done to him - but with no concrete proof, there was no way to convince anyone else that Anamika had arranged for Merric to be incapacitated during Festus’s attack. And as it turned out, he didn’t have to do anything. The second attack by the emperor led to everyone hearing exactly what Anamika had done, and at once there was sympathy in leaps and bounds for Merric. Sympathy was never his goal. But with Secunda leading the clan, and his dearest friends safe and happy, Merric is all right with how things ended up. |
