The All Knowing |
Where does the line between help and a self fulfilling prophecy blur, and where is it sharp enough to cut your feet?
|
Seer was not previously referred to by their function. They had a name, once. Their parents may still know it, but they are long gone, not to be found again. Seer gave up everything for this power of knowledge past, present, and future.
As a hatchling, Seer heard an old legend of a false god that hung himself for nine days and ripped out his eye for knowledge. They admired his dedication, failing to see the revulsion hidden behind the faces of others when faced with this legend. They instead elected to lose themself in further and further obscure research of any other mention of this ritual. All their clan mates saw in them was a hunger for knowledge, not how far they would go for it. They were sent to the Sea of A Thousand Currents in hopes they could study with a clan knowledgable in the ways of prophecy. They were taken in and tutored, instructed in the ways of Sight. Their new clan fed their hunger for knowledge, but not fast enough. No one saw them being consumed. As they delved deeper into lore for any signs of the ritual, they began to neglect their own well being. Their clan mates grew concerned, but they could not be pried from their studies. Eventually, they found scraps of a text detailing the ceremony. Included was the detail that the more that was sacrificed, the more could be gained, and Seer wanted it all. Determined to make the most of their sacrifice, Seer designed hooks and wires to string through their wings and flesh. Once it was done, they speared themself with the metal in a swirl of dark blood that plumed into the water like smoke. They offered up both their eyes to the gods, to the Tidelord, and He listened. The offering was accepted. However, this was not to be enough for the knowledge Seer wanted. They made a deal with the deity. In exchange for knowledge of everything, they would sacrifice not only what was offered, but also their capacity to sense time. They would forever know everything, all at once, never again to interact with the world around them. The deal was struck, and they lost themself. Their still breathing body eventually washed up along a strut of the edge of Plague territory, where they were found by a roving band of mismatched dragons, most of whom are still in the current clan. They were taken in as something interesting initially, and kept once it was realized that they were near immortal and would not need feeding or protecting. Seer is now treated with caution and grudging respect, someone usually on hand to record the information they are constantly exhaling. They have been given a blindfold, a brand, and some prophecy cards, both to make them less unsettling and easier to interact with. The cards serve as an interface between them and the rest of the clan, and questions asked can now be answered in a matter of days rather than months or years. Their perception of time is still unsteady, but they check back in to their "present" often enough to share some of their knowledge. |
Is it better to know or merely to wonder? I have cut my teeth on the future, and it was worth my blood, and I am not much for sharing.
