태양신 라(Ra)는 신들의 왕이었으며 살아 있는 모든 존재의 아버지이기도 했다.
라는 매의 머리를 가진 신이라는 것이 보편적인 믿음이지만, 간혹 황소나 사자의 모습으로 묘사될 때도 있다. 라의 신력은 불가사의한 오른쪽 눈을 통해 구현되곤 했다. 라의 오른쪽 눈은 자유자재로 몸에서 분리되어 독자적인 의지를 갖고 움직일 수 있었다. 대부분의 경우 라의 오른쪽 눈은 태양을 의미했지만, 때로는 그의 딸인 하늘의 여신 하토르로 변신하기도 했고, 라의 의사에 반(反)하여 몸에서 떨어져나갈 때도 있었다.
