Biography
"This is our graveyard," Meredith said. Her voice seemed far away. "But we do not rest here."
"Who rests here?" the hatchling ventured.
Meredith moved reverently past several ancient monuments, giving them a wide berth as she approached to greet the youngster.
"We do not know. They are all at peace, and have been for many hundreds of years."
The nocturne child looked almost disappointed for a moment. Meredith noticed, and hid a small smile behind her bony mask.
"You come here searching for the spirits, young one? They will not answer you. Do you know why?"
When the small one shook his head, Meredith continued, "Because we watch over their memorials with care, reverence.... love. If ever one were to approach this peaceful place with malicious intent... that fragile barrier of serenity would shatter. The spirits would be called from their forever sleep, forced to defend their home."
Meredith now loomed over the small hatchling, the full moon casting a deep shadow over his face as he peered up at her, dread mounting in his expression.
"You must be grumpy when you first wake up, no? Can you imagine how angry you would be after being woken from an impossibly long sleep? An.... eternal sleep?"
The diminutive nocturne, his tail now tucked firmly underneath his body, shook his head slowly, eyes large.
"Go back to your egg-mates, child. Tell them to stop daring the other young ones to visit this place, if they know what's good for them. They know not what they may disturb."
The hatchling, swallowing hard, nodded and skittered away. Meredith noticed him avoiding any and all rocks as he half-ran, half-flew, even if they were not gravestones.
Once he was out of earshot, Meredith chuckled, then cackled. A small light shone from behind a rock at her laugh, and a spirit emerged. A moment passed and then it seemed to happily approach along the leaf-littered ground to drift about her feet.
"Let's carry on, shall we, my friend? A graveyard keeper's work is never done," Meredith said softly, and the wildclaw and her ghostly companion set off wandering once more into the spirit-filled misty night.
