you won't know when it's time

ash to ash, dust to dust
After the beginning of time, when the planets were new and cosmic energies still floated through space and penetrated this world, many essences were born. Some transformed into life while others bode their time, eventually fading into nothingness or sprinkling upon Sornieth. At first, only a dusting of particles similar to what shaped the draconian gods settled upon the land, collecting among the pebbles of a lone mountain the Earthshaker himself formed before war began. They danced among the rubble, essences laughing among themselves each time the gods clashed and sent them skittering. Only when the Shade came forth and battled did the starstuff finally take hold, sinking deep within newly-formed fissures that began riddling the earthy spire. Once the gods sealed themselves away, chaos eventually subsided and a reign of peace allowed the mountain to heal, each crevasse filled and locking the essence inside as it grew alongside a changing planet.

And so, life began again. Biomes were replenished with flora and fauna, evolution bringing forth the rise of new races and civilizations. What stardust lingered within the land of this mountain seemed to pause, watching this world take form once more with what could only be described as patience and curiosity. However, the more humanity grew, the more wary of it the sentient spirits became - they did not want destruction to befall their new home. A protective course of action was planned, and after years of dormancy, the spirits shook off their sleep and set to work.

Sornieth bustled with activity as a whole and separate elemental areas became more defined, but the mountain entity itself remained largely unchanged. While not as powerful as the same galactic forms that transformed into gods, the spirits claiming the spire awoke, stretching out as far as their tendrils allowed and placing a protective barrier upon their mountain and surrounding land. Trees and the makings of a forest held true, but unlike what the rest of the Shrieking Wilds around it became, it still experienced the changing of seasons and many other things most territories did not - it was as if a small piece of each element had solidified underneath the spirits' protection, locking this small piece of Sornieth into a state resembling times of old. Satisfied, the beings began to rest once more, assured their place here would remain undisturbed.

Although most of humankind resided near the Pillar, eventually they branched out, settling across all of Sornieth and growing more intelligent as each decade passed. Technology and arcane knowledge became immersed in their culture, but one group in particular remained delayed in advancement. It is unknown whether the tribe fled society out of fear regarding newfound knowledge or they could sense what would befall their kind because of it, but they began to travel in search of a secluded place they could call home where they could stick to the traditions and culturethey understood and loved. It didn't take them long to reach the mountain, and feeling a strange pull towards it, the nomadic group settled without hesitation.

the days don't warn you

all for naught
For some time the spirits slumbered, unaware that their slice of heaven had been claimed by the humans they so feared. When they did awake, however, despite being stunned, they did not lash out. Instead, they observed this clan, who were well established by the time they were found. It had been half a century since the Oina tribe arrived, but despite this, they'd treated the land with care, using only what was needed and giving back if they could. They did not sport the advancements of the world outside, and the spirits were pleased.

Soon, they began regarding the Oina as part of their perfect ecosystem - a final detail that completed their protected haven. Due to the disconnect from surrounding groups, the tribe had developed upon the culture brought with them to this land long ago, ignoring their warring neighbors. They stuck to traditional clothing, beliefs, and withheld knowledge of past ancestors through song or dance, acts of which delighted and wholly intrigued the residing spirits. Through this, they learned the tribe's language and belief in worship of all things and equality. Fascinated, the beings wanted to interact, beginning to appear to the tribe in forms similar to the Oina themselves while acting as the residing gods they worshiped. At first, the spirits were met with hostility - the Oina did not take kindly to outsiders, especially those who mocked their way of life. But due to having listened to years of stories, the spirits easily persuaded them with a deep knowledge of their culture, and soon the mountain spirits were accepted and regarded as gods and goddesses of their own.

As more time passed and the industrial age pressed on, Kamui (as the mountain was named) remained a hidden, ancient gem, untouched by outside sources. Life flourished, and through belief alone, the spirits began to multiply, becoming new intricate beings of symbolism readily accepted by the Oina. Kamui herself was one of these new spirits, born from the bond between mountain and tribe. She became the Goddess of Winter, mostly appearing in times of strife during colder months. She would assist Oina in the harsh climates or send a blizzard upon them if they lost their way regarding tradition and respect of the land, upholding a balance the spirits so craved. She was fickle, steadfast, and loved the Oina as if they were her own children. Times were good and life was perfect in their controlled environment for a while, but the gods' peace would not last forever.

When a White Light shattered the world, wiping humanity entirety from its surface, Kamui and its residents were not spared. The magical barrier that withheld its elemental properties was bypassed by the surge, shattered, and once the gleaming apocalypse settled, a great cry was heard across the mountain. Their precious tribe - the Oina - had been completely decimated, and the spirits were beside themselves in grief. Most, if not all, immediately fled the mountain, their essence either splintering and returning to the galaxy above or fading into nothingness altogether. Only a handful remained, sinking back deep into the mountain, nearly destroyed alongside their lost purpose. What they had worked so hard to preserve was nothing short of ruined.

When the Arcanist was born, they slept. The onslaught of the Plaguebringer and Gladekeeper did not wake them. When they felt the same strife the Shade had cast down eons ago, they simply curled in on themselves and sunk deeper. Nothing stirred them - not even the destruction of the Pillar.

and your heart just dies

the cycle repeats
What felt like another eternity passed before Kamui internally shifted again. The spirits remained tucked away for so long they had almost forgotten why they'd hidden themselves, but upon remembering, they resumed their mourning, stretching out from the mountain in the form of the space dust from which they were born. They were surprised to see the area teeming with new life, and after a brief glance at Sornieth, it became apparent the world had been reborn again. The spirits were reserved as they found themselves observing a new race once more, and while nothing would ever replace their Oina, they found solace in dragonkind.

If they were to be honest, they missed their charges and involvement with the area, so when two guardians found themselves drawn to what pull was left within Kamui and set out to create a lair, the mountain gods were not opposed. While they kept their titles given by the Oina, they felt indebted to the Gladekeeper as well - she had not only restored the land, but she kept Kamui and the surrounding area similar to how it had been preserved. Deserts, the mountain, plague, shadows, and even the seasons still remained in this unusual slice of Sornieth, even without the spirits' barrier protecting it. So when Reizeku, Brynyl, and their following clanmates began to colonize on Kamui, they accepted and took residence alongside the dragons, vowing to influence them as they had years ago.

Eventually, spirits entwined with the founding guardians, transforming their appearances into a new breed altogether and working through them to assist the rest of the clan. Kamui, Goddess of Winter, also made her return during the first snow, she and others who resumed their prior roles shifting their appearances to reflect that of drakes. Now she is the embodiment of what used to be - of gods, a place, a remembrance of times past - showing herself to those experiencing famine or strife in winter months or simply passing by, leaving a trail of frost on nearby plants and homes as she wanders the mountainside.
