Nimbus was born strong, healthy, well-tempered...and deaf. The Clan healers were unable to fix his hearing, as they couldn't find any signs of damage, so his parents created a sign language for him and the other dragons of the Clans to use so he could communicate. The basic signs, at least, are known across the dragons of the Clan, and some dragons are in fact quite fluent in the language.

Battling and hunting are made difficult without hearing, and he's not particularly interested in either, anyway. Instead, Nimbus helps the Clan as a gatherer and fisher. He can carry quite a lot of food, and the smaller dragons of the Clan enjoy his company as his size alone tends to ward off predators and monsters.

He met Stormbreaker when she was new to the Clan; the mirror dragon offered to join him on a gathering expedition, claiming that another big dragon should be on hand to help carry baskets. With help from Nimbus and the rest of the Clan, Stormbreaker quickly learned Nimbus’ signing system, and eventually helped make a few additions and adjustments to make the language a little easier to read and to sign.
