Feldspar may well be the only dragon who knows where everything is in the library. She can't quite give you the exact position of a book off the top of her head, but she knows the layout and how the books are sorted, and her best guess will get you at best the precise shelf and at worst the correct section. She's done her best to explain her system to the rest of the clan, but the library is so large and confusing that it's much easier to just ask her where things are. Once she did her job much more actively, showing her clanmates around the library and regularly leaving Sparkspell's territory in search of new tomes for the collection, among other things. Due to an unfortunately misfired experiment, however, roughly half of her body has turned to stone and she is more or less rooted in her current position just outside the main library entrance. It saddens her not to be able to walk through her domain and browse the shelves as she used to, and she can now only experience the search for new books secondhand. Mostly, however, she's been surprisingly optimistic about her situation; at least she can do some of her work, and since she's in a high-traffic area she has no shortage of conversation. Just as well, because all attempts to reverse her condition have failed. In spite of her size she has a great love of small, delicate things, teacups and crumbling old scrolls and butterflies, and she is delighted by the little birds that have taken up residence in the frozen coils of her tail. Most of the time she is draped with at least one extraordinarily soft blanket, as much for the simple enjoyment of such comforts as to protect her from the wind constantly blowing through the hall. She is very careful in all of her movements, her time among often very old and fragile objects making her acutely aware of her size. The library maintains a steady stream of acquisitions, both legitimately purchased from other clans and salvaged from ruins not technically within the clan's bounds, and many of these materials are in poor condition when they arrive, from age or carelessness. These are brought to Feldspar in her spot in the hallway for restoration, something she is quite practiced at; everyone knows when new books are recovered by the sound of her humming as she works echoing through the halls. No one interrupts her while she is doing this work, partly out of respect but mostly because it's pointless to even try, since her concentration is such that even an actual explosion on the floor below won't distract her from her task. She likes to classify things, from her beloved books to interesting stones she (or someone else, these days) has collected, constructing elaborate systems for categorizing them based on any number of traits or whatever strikes her fancy. Much of the world is chaos, and while she doesn't mind it exactly, she finds it reassuring to be able to impose order on some small part of it. She is also commonly consulted whenever anyone decides to de-clutter their chambers. |
