Butterfly Bandit
Skilled Thief

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you – Nathaniel Hawthorne

Vivillion came to the clan as a wanderer, born in a distant clan where he first developed his notorious habit. He began life as an energetic and vivacious hatchling, always darting about the lair and causing all sorts of trouble. Among his favorite youthful activities was chasing butterflies. Something about their lovely, soft colors and their whimsical flight enchanted him, and he would spend hours scrambling after them, snapping his teeth and leaping to try and catch them.

He was easily the stand-out of his clutch. He had a big mouth from a young age, always sassing the adults and causing arguments with other hatchlings, but there was a certain charm about him that made it hard for anyone to actually stay angry with him. He was smart, affectionate, and had a youthful spirit that seemed to brighten any occasion.

This, of course, led to Vivillion becoming exceptionally spoiled. As he became accustomed to getting his way, he started to develop the accompanying sense of entitlement, always expecting things to work out in his favor and becoming frustrated when they didn’t. He started to test boundaries in all directions, and soon found himself stealing bits of food, toys, and trinkets from his nestmates.

He went from a hatchling with sticky fingers to an adult with a bit of a problem. He became addicted to the thrill of stealing, and between his physical grace and his silver tongue, he soon became quite skilled. His clanmates sometimes suspected his thieving antics, but he was exceptionally clever at covering his tracks, and he had a way of talking own even the most assured accusation. He would always put on a stricken and sorrowful face, as if his tender heart was broken by his accuser’s lack of trust. Oh, for shame!

His dramatics didn’t convince everyone, but he still evaded discovery. He never left a bit of evidence and he never risked being seen. He prided himself on his growing collection of luxury goods, all purchased from merchants and wandering dragons with treasure earned from his secret ‘hobby’. He never kept anything he stole – he always sold it, or traded it for something else. Dragons who noticed his ballooning wealth might find themselves the recipient of extravagant gifts, all intended to keep them from asking too many questions.

This suspicion didn’t keep him from making friends, or even having suitors. His charm and guile assured his popularity. His impeccable fashion sense and expensive taste in trinkets attracted admiration and envy. He was the life of every party, always bright and entertaining, though many noted his tendency to exaggerate. He loved telling overwrought stories and embellishing his own adventures, but that was all part of the fun. Everyone knew it, and everyone loved it.

Sadly, no show can go on forever. After living his life in such a way, he was bound to one day be caught. On a cold winter morning, he was caught attempting to steal some beautiful morganite jewelry from the clan leader’s mate. He tried to explain it away, but to no avail. He was formally accused, tried, and convicted of the act. He was also convicted of countless other acts of theft, all of which came to light during his trial. He was exiled from his clan and sent away. In an act of kindness (and perhaps heartbreak), the queen allowed him to keep the pilfered jewelry, hoping it would be a strong reminder to never steal again.

Now, the exiled wildclaw was forced to wander on his own, far from the luxuries he’d come to know. Vivillion was too clever to languish, though! He’d formed a good relationship with many merchants over his years of thieving, and was able to talk his way onto a caravan which carried him far away from his old home. He participated in their trade and soon amassed another small reservoir of wealth, though it was nothing like he had before. He didn’t necessarily enjoy the honest work, though. It lacked the rush of adrenaline that he’d come to love. It lacked risk, but for the time being, it sufficed.

For two seasons, he fluttered from one place to another like one of the butterflies that he still loved, meandering about on a light breeze. In time, he came to find a new home, among new dragons who knew nothing of his past.

The dragons of his current clan only see a charming, well-spoken dragon who loves butterflies. He spends much of his time tending to gardens and cultivating plants, not because of any affinity for nature in general, but because he longs to see his little friends’ colorful wings. They remind him of the grace and beauty he once enjoyed in his own home.

He is social in his new clan, and has fallen into some of his old habits. He loves to be the center of attention, telling wild and bewildering stories about his adventures in the trader’s caravan. He creates a sort of living mythology about his old lair, telling incredible tales that have almost no root in reality. His favorite story describes how he was the lover to a queen, who gifted him her royal jewelry in hopes that he would never forget her.

He’s become popular again, and arguably, even wealthy. For Vivillion, those old habits truly are hard to break. Even as he thinks about his exile, about the pain of losing his old life, he finds himself thinking about the thrill. He’s more careful with his thieving now. He chooses his targets carefully, and he’s more conservative in how he enjoys his wealth. He still does it, though. He still lives for the excitement of a double life. That is something that’s not likely to change any time soon. After all, he’s already escaped once. He can do it again if he must.
