Biography

Quote:
Elvanolin Shriojkacha Zartree Kenrahel was written on the top of the page that the infant drow's mother had handed to the farmer. Beneath it, the names were broken down into meanings. Elvan: elf or lost Olin: love or lust Shir: silent or silk Oj: hide or skin Kacha: beauty or hair Zar: dusk or haunted Tree: exile or outcast Ken: servant of Rahel: the gods The woman pronounced the name slowly, and the man repeated it.

Each time one of them said the name, Elvanolin looked back and forth between them. Elvanolin's mother asked if anyone in the nearby town spoke elvish. The farmer laughed saying that his wife, who was currently at the market, is a half-elf. Elvanolin's mother smiled softly asking for the sixth time that the human and his wife were fine with taking care of her daughter. Touching her shoulder the man's expression grew soft and assured her that everything would be fine. At the first sign of trouble, Elvanolin would be sent to his brother-in-law who is a priest.

Looking down at Elvanolin, her mother gently planted on last kiss on her forehead before handing her away. The man took her with a firm, yet gentle grip, saying "hello there. My name in Biarwen, and I'm going to be taking care of you." Elvanolin's mother smiled as tears formed in her eyes. As Biarwen looked to her, the first tear fell and she mouthed thanks, not being able to find a voice.

As Biarwen nodded, Elvanolin's mother turned and left the farm. Sucking in a deep breath, she turned and took one last look at her daughter. Elvanolin was looking at her, so Biarwen looked up as well with pity in his eyes. He gently raised Elvanolin's arm and used it to wave goodbye. Elvanolin's mother waived back before continuing down the road.

Calathra was overjoyed when she returned home from the market. Not only did the cloth that she had made sell, but also Biarwen was caring for a child who would be her own. As Calathra held Elvanolin, he told her all about what happened. Even though she was worried, Calathra was too happy to care, proclaiming that she would take Elvanolin to be blessed by her brother, Cillas her first day off. Biarwen gave Calathra the paper that Elvanolin's mother had given him. Seeing Elvanolin's last name only hardened Calathra's decision.

Within the week Calathra, Biarwen, and Elvanolin rode on horses at night, over to the church of love. Cillas was surprised to see his family, especially with an infant drow. Before he could turn around, Chaelfirth and Aldbert were there. Being the current and the future presider they knew Calathra well, and greeted her and Biarwen with welcome arms.

Chaelfirth looked down at Elvanolin, "well then... Who are you?" Elvanolin laughed and grabbed Cahelfirth's beard.

Knowing Cillas would be nervous Biarwen spoke up, "this is our daughter. Her name is Elvanolin." Calathra handed Aldbert the paper as she retold the story with Biarwen's help. Both listening and reading Aldbert nodded his head, holding the page between himself and Chaelfirth. Chaelfirth heard every word, but didn't glance at the page since Elvanolin wanted to play.

Once they were done Calathra, Biarwen, and Cillas waited nervously for Chaelfirth's and Aldbert's reactions. Aldbert kept a straight face waiting for Chaelfirth's decision. After a while longer, Chaelfirth got Elvanolin to release her grip and looked up. "Well Aldbert, you will be presiding over the church soon. What do you make of the situation?"

Aldbert coughed into his hand, "please do not say that." Chaelfirth rested his hand on Aldbert's shoulder and gave him a serious look. Aldbert sighed, "it was not her choice to be a drow. She should not be punished for it.

Releasing Aldbert's shoulder Chaelfirth nodded, "I agree completely. She will be welcomed into our church just as anyone else is." Calathra, Biarwen, and Cillas all breathed a sight of relief. Sensing the tension in the air and not having a distraction, Elvanolin began to cry. Calathra whispered to Elvanolin as Biarwen brought out a jar of milk and a clean rag. "You can stay here until tomorrow evening. Drows are sensitive to the light," Chaelfirth said.

"If it's not too much to ask," Calathra began. "I was hoping we could get her blessed in the church." She took the wet, milky cloth and fed Elvanolin.

Aldbert looked at Chaelfirth, who simply stared back. Aldbert sighed, "the drow would naturally attracted to the church of darkness. Though she is young enough to choose her own path, you should keep that in mind when she gets older." Calathra and Biarwen exchanged knowing looks before nodding in agreement. Aldbert smiled, "her name does mean 'elf love' though, and I have not objections."

Now interested in the paper Chaelfirth asked, "may I see that?" He read it over while stroking his beard, "hmm... Yes." Handing the page back to Biarwen he asked, "and you said her mother gave you this?"

Biarwen answered, "yes." He wondered what the priest was getting at.

"It is interesting that each section has two or three meanings..." Chaelfirth mused. Looking back and forth between Calathra and Biarwen he asked, "will her name be changed to Leerstrom, or stay Kenrahel?"

Biarwen looked to Calathra who shrugged, and looked down at Elvanolin who's eating was slowing. "I'm not sure," Calathra commented. Looking back to Biarwen she said, "maybe she will stay a Kenrahel if she likes the church."

Nodding and looking to Aldbert and Chaelfirth Biarwen added, "up here she won't fine much work. Even though she'll live with us, we might send her here to be a cleric when she comes of age." His heart sank looking back to Calathra and Elvanolin, "though we accepted her with open arms, most people will reject her for her race."

Calathra, Cillas, Chaelfirth, and Aldbert also looked at Elvanolin who was just starting to close her aquamarine eyes. Cillas spoke up, "I thought the drow had red eyes."

Aldbert looked to him, "many do. Now that she's on the surface, she's lucky she doesn't. The red-eyed drow are high blooded and can see better in the dark. However, that also means their eyes are more sensitive to light."

Chaelfirth nodded in agreement, "her aquamarine eyes means that she was probably middle class. The more surface common their eye color, the lower the drow."

"Elvanolin's mother's eyes were the same color," Biarwen remarked. "If she was a middle class citizen, why did she run away instead of aborting her child?"

Chaelfirth shook his head, "drow are stubborn, but that comes from their pride." Looking around the group he remarked, "I'm sure everyone is tired. We will hold the ceremony to accept Elvanolin as a member of our church tomorrow." With that Calathra, Biarwen, and Cillas bowed as Chaelfirth and Aldbert left.

Turning to Calathra and Biarwen, Cillas said, "follow me. I will show you to the guest room." The room was nicely furnished, and had cribs for newborns, since it is the church of love. After Calathra set Elvanolin down in the crib, Cillas gave her a hug. "I'm so happy for you Calathra."

"Thank you Cillas," Calathra teared up. "My family means the world to me." They pulled apart a short while later. Biarwen held his hand out to shake Cillas', but the half-elf embraced him instead.
Cillas left the room so his sister and brother-in-law could rest. "Your family must be overjoyed." Cillas turned to see Aldbert standing next to him.

"Yes," Cillas replied looking down. "They had been trying to have children for years now." There was sadness in his eyes when he looked back to Aldbert, "not even our wine helped."

Aldbert motioned for Cillas to follow him. "I'm sure you know that Chaelfirth is getting on in years." Cillas nodded, so Aldbert continued, "I'm also sure you know there are rumors that soon the gods will be called upon." Cillas nodded again wondering what Aldbert was getting at.

Aldbert stopped at Cillas' door, "Chaelfirth wants to make sure there is a presider and an understudy when that time comes." Cillas didn't move. "To make sure the positions will be filled, he wants for me to select someone and begin training them if he leaves us before then." Cillas' eyes widened in astonishment, knowing what Aldbert was going to say. "I would like for you to be a future presider over the church of love."

Cillas' mouth went dry, "I..." He coughed to try and moisten his mouth and throat, "I would be honored sir."

"I am glad you have accepted my offer Cillas," Aldbert bowed to him.

Cillas returned the bow as Aldbert walked off. Good fortune was smiling on everyone. Entering his room Cillas told himself not to worry about when it would end.
