Biography
Gale's Thoughts: Flicker
Not long after Furie and the rest of The Seven wandered into my territory, I didn't see the fearless nocturne leader for a few weeks. Their house was silent, and it was unnerving in a way that concerned me greatly.
Ironically, on the day I was starting to get ridiculously paranoid and was about to do something about the lack of signs of life in their building, Glitch appeared in front of me, looking almost as deathly ill as the day he'd shown up draped across Furie's back.
"Please help." He whispered the words like it hurt to say them, and any reservations I'd had up until that point vanished.
As it turned out, the reason the house had been so quiet was because its inhabitants had been absent from it for some time. They had set up a small encampment in a cluster of very small trees, out of sight of the rest of the clan. If Glitch hadn't been with me, I'm certain Furie's crew would have warned me away long before I got close. Hidden away from view, Furie glared at me with a venom that has thankfully only been directed at Chiaroscuro's enemies since that day. She was curled around a single large egg, and the poorly-concealed panic in Glitch's expression told me neither of them were doing very well. Apparently he and Peril were the only two who supported bringing me into the loop (and Peril only agreed because she was certain the egg would not survive otherwise).
After what felt like hours of wheedling and reassurances, Furie, who was much more gaunt than I'd realized while she was laying down, gently scooped up her egg and followed me to the clan's official nesting grounds. It was much warmer, softer, and more spacious than the dingy, cold little place she'd carved out.
Thankfully, after merely five days in better conditions, the small dragon inside the egg pushed his way out, and Flicker was born. I think the entirety of Furie's nocturne band slept in the nesting grounds every night while he was still small, not willing to let anything hurt him after he'd worked so hard to live.
Flicker is one of the dragons in my clan that almost everyone appreciates for one reason or another. He's comfortable with who he is and the life he's chosen, he's always down to snuggle or hug, he encourages others to follow their passions, and even has a bit of a fighter in him if the ones he cares about are threatened (though he always tries diplomacy first). He's always a favorite at bonfire nights too, telling outlandish stories that have even the most stoic dragons cracking a smile every now and then.
He showed an artistic mind (he absolutely loves painting) and a compassionate heart early on, and when his parents decided to have more children, he was ecstatic for the chance to have siblings and be the best big brother he could be.
Since Flicker grew up with Solana and Skydancer's children, they've always been rather fond of him, and gave him a job as Hotel Contraste's groundskeeper. Instead of leaving like most Chiaroscurians do, however, he stayed on with the hotel, slowly garnering more and more responsibilities until he became second-in-command of the entire business. Honestly, he might know more about some things than even Solana does.
And even now, many years after he came into this world, he has seven very powerful nocturnes at his back who are so very glad he never had to grow up the way they did.
