B I O G R A P H Y

Salem was still a tiny hatchling when his family was set upon by a raiding party who wanted to use the bones and blood of the clutch as ingredients for some very evil magic. His parents battled fiercely for their children, but in the end the only one to survive was Salem, who buried himself beneath the sand as his mother had taught him and did not move, despite the carnage he saw. He was later discovered by members of clan Amarayne who took pity on him and brought him back, raising him as a member of the clan. He soon grew to love his clanmates as his family, but he still harbors some resentment towards magic-users.

To his clanmates, despite his traumatic youth he has grown into a well-adjusted young drake. He had reservations with magic, but they can understand this, and besides this he seems normal and friendly. Few if any of his clanmates know that he meets up with a mysterious group at night, and no one knows what the group's purpose is. If questioned, he says nothing more about it than it is a group of his friends who share a common interest, and if pressed may admit to them being a hunting club. He does not, however, reveal the preferred quarry, nor the proper name of this group, the White Claw.

Hatred of the witches who murdered his family long ago has taken root and become his mission in life, to eliminate all "witches" from the world or sell them into captivity to serve the needs of the lawful crowd. Witches, to the eyes of him and his group, are any mages who perform harmful magic. This vague definition allows for many exceptions and even more victims of the White Claw's wrath. While some of his clanmates would surely be taken in if they were living abroad, because he is there to monitor them they are spared. He is careful not to take any from his clan, because he is biased and because he fears exposing his secret. His clan would surely disapprove of his activities, even though he is certain he works to make the world better for them as much as himself.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Salem appears to be friendly and kind among his clanmates, and though he may be guarded around strangers he will quickly come around, provided they show no talent for witchcraft. He is especially fond of the magicless dragon Okiko, whom he often remarks is "pure" and innocent. Privately he thinks all dragons should be mundane like she is, and only the gods should wield power, though he does admit that magic has its uses.

He is reluctant to use his own power even when under duress, and when he does he shows difficulty in casting, as he is both nervous and out of practice. He will gladly use his magic against his foes and his quarry, surprisingly oblivious to the irony of this belief. He most often releases his magic in explosive blasts, incapacitating his target or driving it into a position where it can be captured. He neither asks nor cares about the fates of those the White Claw takes alive, though he has had some twinges of conscience when very young or weak magic users are killed or caught. He is so certain of the righteousness of his cause, however, that he can sear his heart even to these, justified in his mind.

On the prowl he is ruthless, tracking and chasing quarry over all terrains and not giving up unless he is too injured to continue or he loses the trail entirely. Even then he will not give up, biding his time until he gets a new lead and immediately returning to the hunt once he's able. He's a valuable member of the White Claw, but even he takes orders, and only the mysterious head of that organization can call him off of a hot lead. He will show no mercy to those he hunts, preferring killing to capture but usually opting for the latter as it's what his handlers desire. He and the witch Raven are in a stalemate of sorts, as he can decry her before his clan, who are likely to believe him over her, and she knows what he is. For now, he watches her, waiting for her to slip up. It is doubtful he will ever let her be, member of the clan or not.
