Biography
'When a clan knows much suffering,' Reina said to Cheimon while they watched the rest of the lair greet its newest refugee, 'then they lose heart and disband.'
'We have known much suffering,' Cheimon observed. 'But it has only bound us closer together.'
'I know,' Reina says, crest feathers sagging. 'To be honest, I don't know why.'
Cheimon smiled and rubbed her cheek along Reina's neck. 'Because you have not yet given up hope, Ahn-mah.'
Reina huffed softly, but submitted to the caresses.
SolarFlare did come from a clan shedding its members, for its clan leader had given into despair and declared her tribe sundered. She summoned her Windkin to witness, and to seek homes for those determined to carry on. SolarFlare was not sure he would be one of them. He and his mate had faithfully produced two clutches: the first, hatched in the spring of the world when their breed was fierce and rare, produced two children still living. The last, however... all three of those children fled to the Windsinger before they'd even spread their wings, for they were no longer wanted; indeed, few dragons were anymore. In the face of such indifference, why stumble on through this dreary world?
And yet here at his clan's funeral were several Skydancers and Imperials, and their eyes seemed to have known sorrow, and survived it.
What was their secret, he wondered? And could he bear to learn?
SolarFlare accepted Reina's invitation and returned home from her, bowed his head to the gifts given him by his rich new clan. But he waits in wary hope for the one gift they have not yet offered him: the secret to their resilience. Perhaps he might use it to mend his broken heart.
***
It is time to move on. The secret was not here... at least not for SolarFlare to find. But this new clan has asked his services. He will see what there is to learn away from this temporary home.
***
And so it was that SolarFlare came to the Everbloom Gardens in the care of Helvetica and her chroniclers. They promised him time to learn and meditate on the flora and fauna of their lush new home. There were new nestlings to help raise, and new comrades. And he let his heart dare to hope that this could be his true home. And then there was the other imperial male, who kept giving him considering glances . . .
***
It was in Garamond's presence that he found peace. The young male was a fierce fighter and protector. When most of their clutches were called to the Gladekeeper's gardens the wept a bit together. It helped Solarflare to know sweet Centuria went with little Shadow. Neither of them was suited to the bloodier nature of life in The Garden. It was his daughter Blackbird who stayed to dragonhood, stating she would go to the Gladekeeper on her terms.
When Helvetica brought Nyala home, he rejoiced. She was the daughter of his heart, this fierce golden Guardian, and she completed the family both he and Garamond needed during this time of the Gladekeeper's overwhelming call for acolytes.
