Kenopsia had spent so long hoping, waiting, longing, that what stood before him was more dream than reality. The sun was rising on the horizon, casting the world in a soft light. In this moment of absurdity, it made the landscape look fake.
The other dragon started up at him.
Her words broke his trace, splintering his muddled thoughts.
“Who are you?”
He didn’t understand. Not at first. Was this a cruel joke? Had his aching loneliness finally warped his reality?
The dragon before him was dark, with long limbs and an intense gaze. She was small, so small compared to him. He towered over her; and yet she approached without fear.
He was nervous, anxious, under the inquisitive stare of the creature. It was a moment both incredibly foreign and familiar, someone facing him without seeing just the bloodstains and clay.
It took time for him to relax, but there’s something beautiful when someone learns that the world is a better place than they previously believed. This chance, this miraculous shift in fate, eclipsed the years of emptiness for a few moments. Even once Celina, as he’d learned her name to be, had left, and the loneliness gained ground again, he could see a new future. Her actions had proved it; there were those who might accept him. With such a limited view of others, he had feared for so long that there was no one capable of seeing him without thinking monster. It did not matter that it was not now, but the knowledge that someday it could be was everything to him.
—–
He was sculpting when she returned.
In her claws she held a body. It had to have been young, to be so small. Blood fell in slow drops from the figure, clotting the sand where it landed. The wings were twisted and broken, bent beyond what should have been possible. White, jagged bones punctured the figure’s chest.
Kenopsia was certain that was not normal, nor good, and Celina’s expression confirmed it.
She moved toward his sculpture, and he let her push him out of he way. The urgency in her voice quelled the part of him that wanted to stop her. It was his statue, he’d created it, it was all he had -
But the youngling was dying.
He could only watch, enraptured, as Celina guided something to the sculpture. He could not see what it was, but what did he know of the abilities of other dragons?
Celina waited, her expression hopeful for a few moments, then falling, and Kenopsia’s spirit with it. Whatever was happening, it was not the intended results. He’d wanted to help, that was why he had let Celina go to the sculpture, but it was in vain.
Her posture slumped, and Kenopsia tried to gather his strength to say something. Anything, to ask, or comfort, or -
And then, the eyes of the sculpture opened.
Dear Kenopsia,
I hope this letter reaches you well. I have heard so much about you from Celina - she sends her dearest regards. Recently she was saying about how much you loved to look out across from Dragonhome to the Everbloom Gardens in the land of the Gladekeeper, admiring all the life and beautiful green hues. I understand you have never been able to make the journey across, and unfortunately neither have I - perhaps one day we could admire the brilliant colours of the wilderness together, from dazzling emerald to vibrant lime. For now, I hope these small tokens will surfice, for I imagine the barren plains of Dragonhome must be devoid of beauty and colour. Do with them as you wish.
I also understand that you have a dear little bird friend, whose green feathers shine in the sun. Well, that's how Celina described it. I came across this funny blue lizard recently, and - well, set him on your new collection of green and see for yourself! I have never seen an animal do anything like it, he certainly should brighten up your home and might make a splendid new friend for your little bird. If he is not to your liking, don't fret. I'm sure he can survive even in the arid plains that you live in, for he truly is a remarkably adaptable fellow!
Warmest regards and forever grateful,
Keta.

Keta -
It's so wonderful to here from you; and to hear both you and Celina are doing well is truly a gift. I'll admit, I worried.
And I must thank you for the gifts, they are so vibrant! It must be a beautiful world over there, I hope we'll get to visit it one day as well. I've decorated my home (well, patch of shore I prefer) with the array of gifts, apparently the orchids keeps their colors when dried, which has brightened things up considerably. The peacevine, to my surprise, have actually taken root and continued to grow! Quite the slow growers, but it's magnificent to watch them bloom. I've sent a clipping along, and I look forward to maybe even starting a little garden. It'll certainly give me something to do!
As for the chameleon, he's taken wonderfully to the environment! He is remarkably fearless, and has become quick friends with my little bird. I've failed to come up with a name for the little reptile, but he's making himself right at home. It seems his new favorite hobby is either shifting to match my colors, or those of the stones and gems that wash up. For all its emptiness, there are some incredibly interesting gems here, and the chameleon is having a blast imitating them. I've included a few smaller ones that should make the trip in return.
Do give Celina my greetings! I hope the two of you are happy. If there's anything I can ever do for you, let me know, and I will try my best.
with love,
Ken
