Lore
"You could do to bring your high head down from the clouds, son." Dusk told his son firmly.
"What high head? I'm merely fulfilling my role as protector, Father. You named me Protector, let me live my name." "Being a protector is different from smothering." Dusk warned. Protector sighed. "The hatchling should have known better than to wander in that direction. He could wander into danger." "So you take him by the nape of the neck and literally drag him back to his mother...when she had sent him out to do his business anyway?" "I didn't want him to get into danger!" "You keep saying that, but now he's afraid of you." "If he wants to fear me, that's his own choice, I don't choose for him." "Ahh, but son, you influence his view on you...and you best take care that you influence him in a good light." Protector sighed once more. "You know nothing about protection. You allowed my sister to become a traveling dragon. You allowed her to bring home a mate from a clan we knew nothing about. I would have protected her, so she never felt the need or want to wander from home." "Your sister was plenty old enough to make her own choices." "You allowed my brother to leave to a new clan that we'd never heard of! Then allowed one of our own, Irri, to leave to the same lair. She came back with a hatchling! How is that protection?" "They were all fully grown dragons, Protector." "And when you're fully grown you no longer need protection?" "No...but if you decline protection, it's your choice and should be respected." Protector shook his head in distain. "If that's what you want to believe, I guess I can't change your views." "It's what I know to be fact. Take it from me, son...I'm older than you. I've had more time to become wise." "Are you calling me foolish?!" "No, of course not. Merely suggesting that you're not as wise as another may be. There are dragons even wiser than I, Protector. There is always someone better." Protector bit his tongue and glared off into the sun. "I suggest that you become a guard at the entrance of the lair for a time, employ your skills, and your name, in that manner, rather than the way you have been. You have good instincts for protection...but you lack the structure to use them. I believe that as a guard, your instincts will have a better way of release." Protector grumbled about, feeling like his father didn't care about his skills or feelings, but he donned the breastplate and stood guard. It was boring. Very, very boring. But somehow, he learned to enjoy it. |
